I need help deciding wich remington 700 to get.

I am planning on buying a new 300 win mag,I alredy decided to get a Rem 700.I can't decide if I should get the Sendero model,or get a basic SPS model and get a Mcmillan stock for it.Either way,I will have close to the same amount of money in it.Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW,style is not my concern,I just want the best shooting gun for the money.

My 2cents.. Get the SPS, put a Loather barrel on it, and build your own stock off a basic fiberglass rig. However, as I am learning from L.R.H. their are alot of people here, that are ALOT smarter than I am.

I am somewhat in the same boat as You. Im headed down the 300wsm route. From what I can understand about the WSM shoots flatter faster and carries more energy down range than the standard.. Dont qoute me on this. I started hangin around here several days ago and since then I,ve really been set back in my shoes a bit. Alot of smart people here.

I am going to stick with the standard 300win mag because I already have all the dies and lots of cases already,otherwise I probably would consider the WSM.What type of barrel comes with the SPS?Is it a light barrel,or the same one they put on a Sendero?I only want to put about $1500 dollars in this rifle,so an aftermarket barrel won't be an option right now,probably later down the road.

The WSM is not a better cartridge ballistically than the 300 WM, however there are some advantages. The WSM can utilize a short action, uses less powder to get simular velocities. The WSM is not belted (some don't mind the belt), some are experiencing better barrel life, slightly less recoil, you can cut down a barrel on a WSM without having as much loss in velocity compared with the standard mag. Although the 300WM has an advantage ballistically (particularly with heavier projectiles) I'd still go for the WSM personally.

If you plan on extended target shooting sessions a heavy barrel can be a real asset. If you plan on packing in long distances on foot you may want the sporter contour or use a WSM and cut a heavy barrel down. You could cut the barrel down on a standard mag, but you'll be wasting that much more powder. Just my .02.

Rem 700

KQguy, There are alot of experts on this board and I don't pretend to be one of them. Two of my guns are 700's. I have a 270 wsm and a 300 Win Mag. The 300 WM is about 12 years old and back then they came with better stocks. Other than floating the stock, I've done very little to it. I'm afraid to change anything because it shoots so good. It has a VX3 4.5x 14 Leupold on it and I love the gun.

The Sendero is a good starter long range platform. If you are anxious to get this rifle ready to shoot now, the custom stock will put you out a bit more time wise and money wise. The Sendero does still need a skim bed job despite the aluminum bedding block. A custom stock of fiberglass or carbon will need pillars and bedding glass.

With either rifle, check to make sure the trigger shoe has ridges on it. If it is smooth, pull it off and install a Jewell trigger. If it is ridged, it is the old style trigger and is much better than the new ones.

Btw, the 300 win mag is faster than a 300 wsm with any bullet weight you want to send out of it. If I were to build a wsm, I would build it on a long action (forget about the few ounces the short action saves you) and have a long throated reamer custom made. The I would seat the bullets way out and have some place to put some powder. Then it might get close to the 300 win mag. And the belt is a non-issue on the win mag. Using proper loading techniques, you will never know it is there. If it still bothers you, you can turn it off on a lathe very easy.

Another rambling:
If you plan to "dress up" the rem 700 with sako extractors, fat recoil lugs, custom firing pin springs, shrouds, firing pins, and blueprinting, you will have MORE into it than if you had just ordered a custom receiver from the start. A stiller Predator is hard to beat for the money.

The SPS will be much more "field friendly" especially at the end of a long days hunt. If most of your time will be spent shooting from prone or a bench and you will rarely carry the rifle any real distance, the sendero has a lot to offer.

Sporter weight barrels in sporter weight rifles shoot very well in the Remingtons if it's bedding is sound and the loads are tuned to the rifle.
