Resizing help

There are more than that Sikadog. There are reamers based on the original Winchester cases, there are Norma Cases and Lapua cases. Each have a different interpretation of the distance to shoulder, neck length and diameter, body taper and web diameter. Often the extractor grooves are visibly different. My riflesmith had three different neck diameters, depending on what you wanted to turn the necks to.

I did say 6.5 -284 Norma not Winchester I had the throat of mine lengthened so I could shoot 140s without having a lot of bullet in the case.

You need to specify which of the variants you want Norma seems to be the most popular but it's not the only one out there and even it has a tight neck version for target rifles .

Your necks may need turned as they might be tight . Try one piece of brass that you have sized measure the neck then chamber it a couple of time and remeasure the neck to see if the chamber necks it down more , make all of the measurements on the brass not just the neck but the length and diameter as well so that as your chamber changes your case you will know what it is changing . Your chamber will work the brass like your die does but it takes a couple of times to over come the spring back .

Headspace/Shoulder bump?
I would try turning your die down .002" at a time and keep checking in your rifle until the bolt closes.
I would try a Wilson gauge after sizing to test those batch of cases. RCBS makes a Case Mic that has been helpful. Measures shoulder and has provision to measure OAL. HTH Lyle

I didn't read every post but I know I went around and around with the maker of the barrel I used on my 6.5x284...Savage pre-fit.

I dont know why it seems that 6.5x284 is about the only bolt action chamber that has this issue. But I had to buy a small base die so I could use once fired brass in the chamber of my new barrel.

I told him I have been using once fired range brass in guns since the late 70's and never had any issue using once fired brass in many...many guns, but he insisted I could only use new brass.

Now if you find you have a tight neck...that's a whole different issue. One I've never had to deal with. I just talked to a guy who recently had a 6mm Creedmoor built that has to turn necks so his ammo will chamber smoothly.

I seen you were asking about a chambering that has a lot of issues with using brass from another chamber. When I bought my small base die, many people were sold out and I seen several different die makers sell small base dies for 6.5x284. I didn't notice many other cartridges even having small base dies....

You normally only see the use of SB dies with semi autos...

I'd ask the gunsmith for the chamber neck size, it maybe a tight neck chamber and not standard. once you get the neck size measure the OD of your loaded rounds. It should be at least 0.003" smaller than the chamber neck size.

The problem is that the chamber that the brass was fired in is larger than the new chamber. The barrel can be removed and honed on a lathe by a gunsmith until your brass will fit or you can get new brass.

Try a cerrosafe chamber cast. That'll let you know for sure.

I recently rebarreled my 6.5x284. All of my once fired brass from the old barrel will not chamber in the new barrel. It has all been full length resized.

Any ideas?
I have 2 7mm LRMs and I cannot swap brass between them. Most dies don't do a great job of resizing that area around the web of the case. You might be able to find a collet style die to run those old cases into once like http://www.larrywillis.com/. But it might be easier to just toss your old cases and start over.

i load a new savage 111 6.5/284 with 6.5 remington dies first die does the neck second die after priming and power charge seats the bullet , then run the loaded round through a 284 winchester die with the depriming and neck sizing shaft our of the die they work every time just like factory ammo. this amke work with your dies just a step with the full length win 284 die it not touch anything above the sholder..

You may need a small base die or better yet have a sizing die made for your new chamber and then resize your old brass. if the old cases have expanded too wide and too close to the head you may end up having to dump the old brass.
