Bighorn Origin Build

I'm in the process of gathering parts for an Origin build. I would like this to be done with the barrel nut so I can work on it myself (I've done Savage barrel swaps). I currently have a McMillan Gamestalker that has the Remington Sendero inlet. My question is, will I be able to easily sand out the barrel channel for a Proof Sendero (Not Light) contour as this is how the prefits come and will I have to relieve the area for the barrel nut?

Thanks for any input/advice on this. If this too much trouble, I could send off the stock or just have my smith spin me up a shouldered proof and be done with it.

i have the same set up. the only thing i had to do was relieve the nut area in front of the lug. just take your time it's not hard. if you have a dremel takes about 5 minutes with a round bit. i have built 30 or so off of remington actions. make sure you get a custom small shank savage barrel nut.

Older thread but a question. What do you mean by custom small shank Savage barrel nut?
How is the build progressing? I am looking at using an Origin myself.

Buy a custom ground nut from Northland shooting supply, Mcgowen, or a well known company. they run around 35-45 dollars. the Origin is a small shank savage thread pitch, not the same as a remington 700. remington has a 16 tpi, while the origin is 20 tpi.

Why would you use a nut??? There are several vendors selling shouldered Origin prefits. They are easier in every way.

But I LIKE the nut. You can rebarrel yourself. I already have some Savage shank barrels on hand. You can set your headspace yourself and not be tied to the headspace some else set with a prefit shoulder. You can headspace match several rifles in the same caliber to simplify reloading die settings.

I just had never heard custom ground. I just assumed I would use a spare Savage nut. I will look them up. Thank you.

That is the entire and only point of a PREFIT shouldered barrel. You can install it and it's already headspaced. It literally takes half the time and the cost is almost identical. Use the nut if you desire. It is your time and money but makes zero sense unless you have a cheap sloppy action such as a Savage or 700 you are deadset on using. I completely understand the point of throwing a barrel and nut on an cheap action to save a couple hundred dollars. The Origin is not that. One of the biggest benefits of a Bighorn/Zermatt action is the very tight tolerances that allow prefits. Good luck!

Yeah...He means there are prefits that you just twist on and are done. The headspacing on the origin and the barrel are already set. You don't have to do anything....

I use the nut because i already own 6 barrels for the action, and all 4 bolt heads. i do have a 350 legend barrel coming from preferred barrel blanks. My bad, custom machined barrel nut.
