Long range bullets that will penetrate up close without blowing up.

There seems to be two classes of bullets and if I am incorrect here then I am sure someone will correct me. There are those bullets that will as a rule fragment and blow up at speed but as they slow down 25 or 2400 fps the will penetrate and expand as normal. or those that will expand as normal at speed 31 to 3300 fps and at distance will not do much expanding at 700 plus yards. Would it be impossible for some one like Nosler to take a Partition and add a boat-tail design and an ELDX type heat shield type tip on it . Jack Carter was getting close. Think it would work at up close ranges and also open up at long range?

Here is a picture of a couple Barnes LRX bullets that I shot into a steel plate at 100 yards. Probably 2900-3000 FPS with the loads that day.

I've shot a few deer with Nosler Ballistic Tips and Accubond bullets (308 and 165-168 grain, 270 and 130-140 grain and 338 with 180 and 225 grain weights). MST were taken with the 308. Raking shots with the Accubond worked out fine. The BT showed much more dramatic expansion in my experience. I wouldn't take any shot much more angled than quartering with it.
I also have a 300WM. It gets nothing lighter than 180 grain slugs. I would expect it to provide violent expansion with 165-168 grain slugs, unless you went to a mono (which I have very little experience with).
I read somewhere that the 150's were made for the 308 class, 165's for the 06 class and 180+ for the mags.
The only hiccup I have had with Accubonds was a frontal shot on a WT doe at 90 yards with 270 Winchester and a 130 gr. Center chest hit and portions of the bullet were fount throughout the left hindquarter. I was hoping to find an expanded bullet, but all I found was fragments. Not seeing this as a failure, just glad I kept it off the shoulder.

Hammer recommends 1800 FPS impact velocity for optimal results. My load carries 1800 FPS well beyond 900 yards so it must not be a long range bullet. Never mind all the critters that were taken at 700+ last season.

With some of the cartridge/bullet combo's available one can extend the range which a particular bullet will expand reliably. I don't know if this is a third class of bullet, or just another way of solving a ballistics problem.

We have the capability of launching bullets at speeds between 3500 fps and 4000 fps, extending useful range beyond what was logical a few years back, and being reasonably competitive with moderate velocity, high BC combo's, considered LRH standards.

A 1000 fps increase in velocity is similar to the advantages gained by smokeless powder back in the day.

The 7mm 175 Nosler ABLR have worked very well in my rifles this year. Blow threw elk from 100 to 700 yards, (so far) and have confidence in them a lot farther to do the job, and a tough bullet at close range !!

The LRX is your best choice. Functions down to 1600 fps which is bettt than most lead core. Don't let the BC scare you as most on here are not capable of killing animals, nor should they be past 900 yds. Also, the non melting tip from Hornady is a myth & great marketing lots have fell for. Tips don't melt.
