l saw a few O&U smooth boar slug guns from a few diferent companys and really liked the look of them. l like the beauty of the over and under guns and when thay have a slug barrel on them thay look eaven better.
so l think lm gonna go ahed and order the factory to make me a smooth bore slug barrel with open sights for my O&U shotgun. but the only thing that is holding me back is the 2 shot thing.
l will strictly use this set up over bait from close range.
so what are you guys take on double barreled shotguns for hogs ?

p.s: l cannot have a rifled slug barrel because of the laws of the country that l live in.

example pic of a basic over and under slug gun that l found on google

You can't have a rifled shotgun barrel so I really see no draw back to using the O/U. You aren't going to get more than a couple of well aimed shots off over a bait anyhow. The pigs will scatter on the first shot so your second shot is going to be on a running boar. A third to 5th shot are not going to be real helpful in 95% of all cases.

I am a big fan of Overs and under shot guns, they are my favorites. With that said for hogs, I prefer the 3.5 " Semi Autos with 4 rounds of double 00 buck shot over slugs because of the number of running shots needed and when faced with a ticked off hog intent on harming you, the 3.5" load of buck in the face will end any though by the pig of harming you.

The range of the biggest buck shot is well within the needed range and a lot better chance of a terminal hit on the hog in a rushed shot situation.

Just my preference

this was exactly what l was thinking. lm mostly planing to hunt with it at night over bait so l dont think l will need more than 2 shots. plus over and under shotguns with open sights look so beautiful. :)

what l have seen through out the years is that buck shot tends to woond big boar in most situations than kill them. how ever l fully understand that a semi auto shotgun does give you more shots incase of an angry boar charges you. in regards of very close rage shots made with buck shot : in a defancive situation there is not much diferance in dificulty hitting a wild boar from 2-3 meters with buck shot or slugs, as the buck shot doesnt have the nesessery distance to spred at that range. but l do feel the saim about haveing more shots is safer in that situation. but semi auto shotguns tend to only jam in situations that you dont want them to :) there for a pump action could be a bit slower but a safer bet. ( my benelli süpernova jammed alot. there for l got rid of it )
the only reason l want to get the O&U slug gun is because of its looks and the fun of hunting with it. nothing like going Bang Bang and droping 2 animals from 2 barrels one after a nother. and if thay dont drop and get angry,.? l guess its time to try and run away :)

If you are shooting over bait, or at driven hogs, the number of times you will be charged by a wounded pig are ZERO. Tracking wounded animals in the bush, different story, but a pig hit on a bait pile is completely focused on getting out of there. Unless you just happen to be on his escape route, he isn't coming after you.

I will second that Buckshot is a bad idea. Under 40 feet it has about the same coverage as a slug, it isn't any easier to hit your target with and even the biggest buckshot is lousy at penetration and stopping power compared to a slug. Buckshot is actually illegal in may European countries for hunting Boar just because it wounds so many animals.

You have the gun already. Assuming it has the right chokes,, you could mount a red dot sight and shoot slugs out of it to try it out.. You will know pretty quick if it is the right answer for the type of hunting you do. If you like it you can order the short, specialised barrel set.

I have hunted with slugs and found them very lethal but found the same thing true with the proper sized buckshot. I have been charged by many hogs that were shot with a rifle and slugs and the idea of the buckshot is for self preservation, not shot placement. Shot placement is also not as important and with the right choke at a few feet you already have an impact area several inches in diameter also improving the chances of hitting something vital.

Where I hunt you may not even have time to aim because of the underbrush with visibility of 10 to 15 feet, and point and shoot may be your only choice. Different hunting conditions call for different solutions, and this is just what works best for me.

I don't understand why your Benelli has failed you though. I shoot a Beretta Extrema and it has never failed me, and i do like the 4 shots.

yeah the bennelli semi autos l have owned before like the süper black eagle 2s that l have had had been good performing guns. but the pump action süper nova that l have had jammed on me many times. the problem was the two sleds on the action that jammed in the open position. and it was a hassle to get them unstuck as thay would come off there rail.

look at this for a set up.... and look mate its got the buckshots to go with it. l can imagine you with it, takeing a spent Shell out one of the smokeing barrels and smelling the burnt gunpowder over the big hog that you have just downed :) come on mannnn. double barreld guns are cool in there own way you got to admit :)

but l still like the look of a nice over and under...

Doubles, and over under's have a cool factor it's true, but so does the Benelli M4.

So many "buckshot" loads any more I'm not sure it's a stand alone statement. Variations in velocity, pellet numbers, composition complicate it a bit.

I am a slug gun fanatic, been hunting with slug guns for 30yrs.. I can tell you the retweil RWS slug is devastating on hogs... Killed tons of big boars in FL with them.

Hello fellow slug hunter. I'll have to give those a shot. I've been using the accutip in all
My long range slug guns but need a smooth bore option for this new guy.
