277 SIG furry and cross rifle -- yes, 80000psi

They say it is reloadable and will have components offered in the future, uses a new powder

Looks like a 277-308ai, wont chamber in any 308 variant. They claim a 6.5 version in the future and also magnum calibers. They claim a rem700 action will handle the pressures but dont recomend it as it will put undue wear on it. ( think bolt thrust thread if you understand bolt thrust) cases have a thin/light ss head mechanically bonded to a brass case. Will be saami approved early this year. If they win the mil mg contract then there will be cheap ammo. They have 3 types of ammo planned right now that would be avail to public in 2020: 140fmj, 135 otm, 140 bt-- and others for mil like ap, etc.
Doesnt look like it will be designed for lr, high bc bullets-- more like 130-150 range, we'll see.

Lots of info already on here.

I read it, does anyone have any info on the primers yet?
They claim " it will not chamber in any other 308 variant chamber" like 308, 6.5cm, 7-08 etc-- would it chamber in a 270redding chamber? Anyone seen the chamber/reamer print yet?
I know there were a few fortunate people that got tohunt with it this past season ( i hear 1 in CO for sure) and I'm pretty sure they had them at ss this year so I was hoping for updated info.
Claims are its 270 win speeds from a short action 16" barrel.
I know they got the 130 class up to 3000 in experimental 6.8spc ammo with special powders but it was fairly high pressure for the all brass case and platform.

Looks like the high pressure will dictate the bolt locking into a barrel extension (similar to ar's but different lug pattern)-- there was just a thread not too long ago about how this design was inferior in accuracy to the standard bolt to receiver traditional locking system of bolt action rifles, yet the sig "cross" rifle is being touted as a "precision rifle chassis" ...interesting where this may lead in the future

Have been watching the SIG Furry since it first hit print. Yes, 80,000 psi. I won't think that you will be seeing reamers, dies or load specs any time soon. There is simply not an action out there that can handle the stress......safely anyway. They are not going to turn loose to the reloaders what could be a disaster in the wrong hands.

Saami specs are suposed to be out in 1st quarter this year, at that time the ammo and chamber specs and drawings are free source...maybe not reamers but really there is no "receiver" the sig cross receiver is just an aluminum chassis just like all the other ar chassis rifles as it will be the barrel/barrel extension and bolt/lugs that make the "strong part" -- I think the biggest issues will be the proprietary way the 3 part case is made and what "coating or hardening" process they are using to getthe "claimed long barrel life" from an 80000psi cartridge

Dies and load specs are rumored to be out by mid to late this year " --- things could be slow for civilians on this new technology though of sig wins the mil bid process as all resources will initially be devoted to the mil contracts untill they can get a surplus for civilians

Personally, I don't see the need because other cartridges can do the same or better with less pressure, and be easier on the rifle and components.

I have built several high pressure cartridge rifle combinations and they never did anything but cause problems. I know longer build anything that needs more than 63,000 Psi to get the performance that I want because all you have to do is increase barrel length and case capacity
and it can be done.

All I see is and expensive rifle, cartridge and component combination that will not out perform other cartridges. the 7/08 AI will do more than 3000 ft/sec with a 140 grain bullet with lots less pressure and wear and tear on the equipment and components. also if you shorten the neck and wildcat the 7/08 AI, it will gain 7 to 10 more grains of powder capacity and match the performance without the excessive pressure.

I see no real reason for this cartridge unless you want to spend more money and it becomes the "New" fad in designer cartridges.

I also don't like the two piece cases because I see nothing but problems. (But what do I know).

Just My opinion

I think it's the fact that it's done in a 16" barrel is what impresses people. You're right--in conventional platforms with 22"+ barrel lengths, it doesn't add much. They did mention that it will be available in standard pressure configuration, but I'm thinking the fps on it will be underwhelming. Just basically a 270-308.

You might be surprised. There are actions on the market now that have been tested above 100k psi. Ill see if i can find them again. I believe one is the Mausingfield.

There are plenty of actions that will handle the pressure. But there are many other problems that will crop up at those pressures. Velocity is not an issue on something like this, But throat erosion and heat cracking/ checking will be.

One of the things that I noticed with the high pressure loading's was the throat erosion and the need to set the chamber back after only a few hundred rounds to regain accuracy. this was the main reason I purchased a bore scope so I could see/follow the progress of erosion in the throat.

In these experimental loading's, I found chambers/throats lasted only 2 or 3 hundred rounds but the bore remained good for 12 to 1500 rounds before it was used up. When I backed off the pressure (From 75,000 to 65,000 I noticed a huge difference if throat life. When I went to 63,000 Psi max, the chambers and throats performed normally and life was restored to thousands of rounds. that Is when I decided to stay below 63,000 by going to more slow burning powder and larger case capacity to get the desired velocity.

The extra powder cost a little more but was cheaper in the long run by saving components, barrels and actions. The use of more efficient case designs also aided in this improvement.

Buy or build what you want and live with your decision as I did. One of the advantages of age is that you don't make the same mistake twice. (I had not listened to my own advice and it took several times to figure out that Pressure is the enemy of longevity.

I agree with you on the 16" barrel, but if you think about the game we are in (Long range) short barrels have no place except in the ghetto and with the use of a can for varmints. also very short ranges.

Being different is great, but sometimes it is just being different with no improvements.

I also have dealt with proprietary powders and components and found them to be a pain and sometimes not even available. and also performance as advertised such as velocity was not possible to the re-loader and many times not real when chronograph. Also the price of proprietary ammo is normally two times the price of standard ammo if not more and hard to find.

Sounds like a lot of negativity, but it is just the nature of the beast when pursuing specialty cartridges.
