Well, I took your advice and split the bushing. Thanks for the heads up on the Howa and Weatherby, good to know.

I been thinking of trying hardwood bushings when I get around to making my vise...worth a try and if I screw up the finish on the barrel on my rem700 I'm not really too concerned about it, since I'll be replacing it anyway sooner or later.

Easy to make, ya',, but they have a lot of 'give' to 'um and tend to split where aluminum or steel doesn't. I made some out of Delrin. OK for installing a custom or removing a barrel that has already been removed once but won't hold a Rem or Win. Neither of those are very hard to remove

Yes,,, I hear yha...
My old rifle builder friend use to find hard wood,,, then he would make big thick barrel blocks,,, he would sprinkle some kind of white powder on the barrel,,, clamp it in his big shop vice and screw the actions off...
I'm sure he put more pressure on those blocks than was needed,,, he was pretty cautious to not end up with a barrel twisting free in the blocks,,, i think it wrecks them since its harder to do the next barrel if 1 has been spun in the blocks...
Purhaps it wrecks the wood grain texture where the barrel rests in the wood...
He had alot of blocks since he made his own barrels,,, 1947 to 1996 before he retired...
He made his own barrel lathe and wood stock duplicator,,, a machinist with the skills and tools
He was darn near a second runner up to Mr Browning,,, the only thing he never made from scratch was a Remington,,, Jewel,,, or Trigger Tech triggers,,, back in his day the old-school Mauser and Winchester triggers were much easier for him to copy...
He let me join him in his private re-loading room that he had down stairs,,, it was his top secret laboratory...
When he flipped on the light i seen this weird contraption with tanks and hoses along with a burner on the botton of 1 tank,,, my first thought was he was making his own high tech rifle powder,,, now how kool is that i thought... Ha...
He looked at me and said,,, you ain't never seen a Whiskey Stihl... LOL...
Yuppers,,, those old timers like to make alot of their own goods,,, it was all about not paying taxes and keeping a low light in the eyes of the public and the Governent...
