Tuning for long range

Yes, it was not as bad as other preps but didnt shoot as small as a nylon brush. The nylon brush does not disturb the carbon layer, it just burnishes it. The worst was a clean neck. A bronze brush removes the carbon and will about triple friction/seating force. If I had to use clean necks I would lube them with some graphite or lock eez

Nylon brush only has been my practice for quite awhile now.
 
When you find the node in the ladder.
Do you try groups at 100 yards?
Or do you test the groups at the distance of the ladder?
In my opinion anything you do at 100 yards does nothing for distance shooting having to do with ladder test and grouping other than getting new brass cycled and breaking in a barrel.
You can get an idea on pressure but that's about it.
 
So in your all's opinion what would you all do with this information?

Load development is with my custom built Bighorn Origin chambered in 6.5PRC, WTO switch lug, 26" Krieger 4 groove 1-7", Krg bravo stock, Athlon Cronus BTR, Nightforce rings. Using a Magnetospeed V3 chrono.

Shooting 147eldm's, Gunwerks virgin neck turned brass, CCI200 LR primers, sized with Forester FL W/o decamping pin, mandrel sized with Kenny Porter die with -.263 gage pin

This is the initial velocity/node/pressure test that I did at 300yrds. Shots 4, 5, 6 with RE26 looks promising. IMR didn't do as good as I hoped and WILL NOT BE MESSING WITH IT ANYMORE WITH THIS BULLET. The testing was with .010" off with a MS V3 on the barrel.




I decided to go on the low side of the middle of the 55.3 and 55.6 to do my seating depth testing at 55.4gr. I did .010", .020", .030", .040", .050" off testing today at 100yrds.

Like I've seen, read and heard before, just because the groups are good doesn't mean the loads are good, so, I'm thinking of going .010" off and bumping up the charge weights. I have 55.4gr RE26 at .010" off to test again because I think that one bullet is a flyer and want to retry, 55.5gr RE26 at .010" off, 55.6gr RE26 at .010" off loaded up and ready to shoot.

Is there anything else anyone would do differently?

Hard to say, but you mentioned you were using virgin brass, so that may effect things a bit. I would also be moving to a .262" mandrel for .002" tension. What's your barrel round count?
 
1. I would get the magneto off the barrel during load development.
2. Get your brass to atleast the once fired stage.
3. Dont be stuck on just one primer.
4. Using the .263 mandrel probably has got .002 neck tension with spring back especially if your not annealing, not to say .262 wouldnt be better.
 
By the way I just added a Kenny Porter mandrel die to my arsenal how do you like it ?
Havent tried mine out yet.
 
1. I would get the magneto off the barrel during load development.

I use a Wiser Precision mount that utilizes a carbon fiber mounting rod to a pic rail for holding the MS bayonet. No contact with the barrel and no more wasting rounds—can now collect velocity data on all my load development shots AND test for POI/groups.

Works great if you have a chassis or a flat bottom forearm where you have a pic rail that is parallel to the barrel (like an HS Precision or others).

This mount has been a game changer for my load development sessions.

Ya, I figured virgin brass would a little. With spring back the -.263 should get me if I did the math right .0022" neck tension after .001 spring back. Round count is around 100.

1. Did, just had it on the barrel for the pressure/velocity test at 300, lol couldn't wait any longer. Wether has been crap and don't want to shoot this when the wife is home.....lil noisy
2. Ya getting there with that and in the process getting a feel for what/where it likes things.
3. I'm not, but if it's working good with what I've got I may leave it alone until powder is not a scarcity lol.
4. Haven't annealed them yet as they were when I got them. If I do anything with neck tension I will use the -.264 mandrel and that should get me around a .001" neck tension.
