Good Weight for a Hunting Rifle

I totally agree that we can all learn from one another in many aspects to do with shooting/hunting/reloading/gunsmithing etc but when it comes to physicality what you can do, carry, drag, put up to your shoulder & hold zero is different from me.

Mute point imo!

Some people just love to 'tire kick' I know but man what is the point of having a 5lb rifle if your carrying a 20lb pack??

I think maybe I have been around forums for to long, I shouldn't comment on pointless things & leave it alone but seriously do people even make an effort to answer their own questions sometimes before posting

Yes we do really need good positive help at times but do people really need to ask what they themselves can carry [/QUOT

Geez, from another Aussie who comes here to learn and gather information etc , yep I agree, you have been around forums too much. Go and take a bex and have a lay down or better still get out for a shoot

You must be around my age if you know what Bex is?

Anyway yeh I had to have a few panadol's this morning from the 3/4 bottle of bundy I drank last night

Now that I am sober, I still feel the same way though, yes I agree I spend to much time on many different forums, actually I used to be an administrator of an aussies shooting forum but gave it away.
People say there are no stupid questions put out there...………………..I tend to disagree but hey its a democracy & that's my opinion o_O

At least it got you to post your 1st comment after nearly 4 years :p

I have rifles scoped that are from 7 pds. To 13 pds. . I just consider what type of hunting I'll be doing and what game I'll be hunting and choose. That's the fun part of having multiple rifles. Sometimes tho if you have too many it might take you awhile to choose. It can be a b***h. :)

I've always hunted with light sporter weight guns. 700 mt rifle, 70 featherweight and always enjoyed hunting with them. Made the switch to a med Palma weight barrel and absolutely hate it for hunting! It's great to go shoot for fun but it's horrible on the shoulder, I'm definitely looking for another light sporter for a hunting rifle! The Christensen Mesa in 6.5 prc is looking pretty good right now. 81/2 pounds ready to go is much better than 11pounds for sure

Doubled your post count in one day :p:cool::D;):)

All good Aushunter, yeah the old bex haha. Well we both have something in common, we both like to shoot/hunt and we both like Bundy so all good mate. Anyway to the op, my ideal carry weight scoped with sling is about 3.5 - 3.6kg (8lbs therabouts) 300wsm

No worries mate, I get in these moods sometimes after watching grumpy old men to many times :D

Nice, we have even more in common, I have a 300WSM as well.
Its a Browning BLR, no idea what it weighs but is less than my Rem SFV which I carry most of the time.

I don't bother worrying about rifle weight, if I get tired walking I stop & have a rest.
If its to heavy to aim I use a bipod or a tree for support ;)

The question is somewhat a personal thing & the answers cannot be an answered other than anyone else but you!!

I find these sort of questions pointless imo for this reason!!!!

What you can carry, bring up to your eye freehand & shoot is different to me.

What you can carry for miles & still be effective with it is different from me.

What 1 person can do has little relevance to what you can do.

Hence a pointless question imo.

Sorry just reality!!
I have to agree with Aushunter on this. I have several rifles and I pick the one that I think fits the hunt and terrain of that I am hunting. Lighter rifle for long hike hunts. The rifle has to fit your needs not others. And remember the biggest guy in the squad usually carried the Browning 50 cal, the rest carried an M16.

I guess I am in the minority here.
My "lightweight mountain elk rifle" is 8lbs 13oz. Feels like a featherweight to me though.
My "carry rifles" are between 9lbs 6oz to 11lbs. All plenty light, but have enough weight to be very stable for long shots if the need arises. And out west, you never know if you are going to jump a buck at 50 yards, or see them across a couple canyons @ 800+.
My long range elk rifle is 15lbs. It sucks to carry, but it is not built for that. My son-in-law won't hunt with anything else though, (his "lucky" rifle) so HE gets to hump it around.

If we were shooting the "infamous" 6.5 Creed @ 3.5 pounds (scoped, loaded, slung....no brake)

Now that's a "carry rifle" weight! But.....probably "not" enough weight for stability! memtb
Care to share specs on a 3lb 8oz scoped 6.5CM? I would LOVE to see that! I cannot comprehend how nice that would be to carry/pack.
Is it a pistol?

The pack is carried by the whole body. The rifle is carried in one hand. That's quite a difference.

Depends. I carry my rifle in my eberlestock pack. I can access the rifle rather quickly if needed but 99% of the time it's in my pack. I am hands free to glass etc but I hunt western mountains where it is more open and I am not busting brush or jump shooting. If I am in stalking mode the rifle is in my hands and I have also have a tactical sling I use to share the burden. Same time of sling used in comps where you can easily and quickly engage with the sling.
