Resurrection of the .308 & upping the game

I shoot 165 gr Nosler BTs over 43.5 grains of Varget in my AR308 16" barrel and my Savage FCP-SR 20" barrel. Groups average .8 MOA in the AR and velocity is 2493 fps. My Savage groups average .65 MOA and velocity is 2690 fps.

It hammers pigs and deer. In 2019 I shot 7 large pigs (190-245 lbs) with my night-vision setup on my AR all DRT. I killed 2 smaller boars (132 lbs and 144 lbs ) with one shot, was able to wait to shoot until their heads were lined up and down they went.

I have had really good accuracy in several rifles with 52gr of 748 pushing a 125gr TNT. Out to 300yds I dont see much advantage to shooting heavier bullets for non hunting purposes. Had good results on white tails and antelope with the 125gr TNT if ya keep it off the shoulder.

I shoot a Winchester M88 in 308, so it's a bit of a different animal, but it's a great hunting rifle. I feed it 165gr HotCors and MR2000. It shoots very well for a 50 year old rifle.

My factory 20" Rem700 308win loves IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax. Sub 1/2 MOA never looked so good, and with a can on the end, it's quite easy to shoot all day long.

well, I guess not quite factory. I moved it into a Magpul hunter700 stock and gave it a Jewel trigger
Which model 700 do you have ? Just wondering because I have a Mapul Hunter stock sitting in the close for the past 2 years and I want to set up a a 20 inch, something I can carry in the mountains..

Nice to see all the love for the 308. Makes me want to dig mine out and make it shoot. Haven't touched it in 5 years.

4064 has always been good to me in 308. 165 to 180 accubonds have also been good rounds in my 308. Match kings are not hunting bullets so I don't use them as I hunt with my 308. I have used blitzKing bullets with great results on paper and on dinner. When I get young folks, beginners, and ladies shooting, I make 125 grain sst with blue dot. Very fun to shoot, has ability to harvest deer to 150 yards and just comfortable to shoot. Be careful loading, measure twice and stay focused. Pistol powder can be dangerous if over loaded, lots of pressures

That's crazy. I just started fiddling with 195 TMK's in my 20 inch and it took a lot more RL-15 then I expected to get to 2535. However, with a 195 TMK that still edges out the 175 TMK in the wind at 2650
My rifle is crazy. Even the gunsmith that did the barrel can't believe how well it shoots. LOL It's a keeper. Thanks to Tim Smith in PA.

175 1st then 195. And yes I reuse my targets. That's why they give you the spots. LOL

Three years ago when I started my romance with everything 6.5, I took the optic of my FCP-SR (24" w/ box mag) and put it away. Now my son is ready to start shooting and I'm mounting a scope this afternoon and I'm going to place a Midway order for bullets. This will be a plinker/hunter. My last pet load was nothing fancy but shot real well - either a 168 Sierra Match king or a 165 Sierra Gameking on 42 grains on IMR 4895, each 20 thou off. It pushed 'em at 2,745. Its got a lot of life left in it with only 300 rounds down the pipe. So I'm thinking of developing something around a 168 or 178 ELD-M. Is this a good choice? How bout a more "modern" cleaner powder? I have a variety on hand, Alliants; Varget, etc. The Midway order awaits - What do you opine?

150 Barnes TSX 45.5 IMR 4064. My 08 loved this load deadly accurate to 650+ yds... plink with factory loads but when it comes to hunting this is the load I recommend.
