Who hunts with a chassis

For all those who have are intimidated by a little aluminum, here is a new solution which will debut at S.H.O.T. Show:

There are a couple of other non-aluminum chassis being introduced also. I think GRS has one and MDT.
Why would someone be "intimidated" by aluminum? Is that the word you intended to use? I hunted with a 6.5 Grendel AR one season. 7 degree temps suck while packing aluminum, even with gloves... I like the chassis guns just not for hunting...

For those that have swapped to a chassis on their rifles, have you noticed better accuracy and I mean further down range. And, do you think it was because of better fit or the additional weight added.

Thanks,
Rick

The chassis I have now was a McGowan barreled .308, I started out in a "accu-stock" with the full length aluminum block. I did notice a difference in accuracy, but i don't think it's because of the weight. They weighed almost the same, but the stiffness/rigidity was much noticed. It made the rifle feel solid as a rock. I think it does help that you can fit the rifle to you exactly, LOP cheek riser height etc. I also like it for the fact I can make it perfectly fit a young shooter. I have a niece that just turned 15 and a nephew that is 10, and I've adjusted it to fit them as if it was theirs and it's amazing to see the difference of how they shoot when the rifle fits them.

Since I've started this thread and the reading, I'm pretty much set on getting the magnesium chassis. With a finished weight of only 28 oz, I can't find a traditional stock with DBM/bottom metal that is close to that weight with the modularity of the chassis

My Crazy brother and his 18lb 308...o_O Yes he had this built for hunting..

I never noticed any accuracy difference, if anything slightly less for me. I'm just not that comfortable behind a chassis. Even setting up my brother's MPA for me when i ran my tempest on it it's just not my thing.

Keep us posted i'm interested to see this. I always though that despite KRGs polymer construction if someone really wanted an ultralite build you could slap a Ti action, carbon barrel in a Bravo or X-ray and have an extremely light rifle.

Precision Underground makes a handguard insulator that looks like it could be a way to reduce heat loss in the cold. I don't have one but do have an eye on it because I am building a chassis rifle at the moment.

I am looking at this option also since the chassis has so many ways it can be adjusted.

I spoke to Ryan Pearce and he quoted a weight for a completed rifle using a Proof barrel,Element chassis and including the mag at 8 lbs and 7 ozs. That is about 10 ozs more than an equivalent say Manners stock with built in cheek rest.

I think with improvements in weight reduction the chassis will become more popular in the future as a hunting rig option.
I have one coming from Ryan in about 5 days in 300 Norma Improved. It is built on the 3.0 magnesium chassis so we shall see.

What scope are you putting on it?
All I had in the safe was a March High Master 10-60x56 that I use for load development and he wanted to mount it so thats what I sent him. I am waiting until after Shot Show to see what new optics are out there but seriously considering a Zero Compromise that was reccomended by Ryan. I will get by with the March until brass is fire formed and load development is done.

I haven't looked at March but ZCO is currently the most affordable thing relatively close to TT on the market. Minox ZP5 is right there with it but the QC varies a bit. ZCO is worth every penny. If i could've gotten one i would've for sure but the ZP5 for $2200 new is impossible to turn down for that quality of glass.

I will most definitely do that. So far he has been great to talk with and I feel bad for him having to answer all my dumb questions but he has been very friendly and has great advice.
My experience with him also. I have not pulled the 'trigger' yet, but close. Still kicking the idea back and forth about a chassis for hunting although it has numerous advantages I believe over the more traditional design of a stock.

Do you have a link to these?

This will be more of a hunting rifle for me so I am leaning towards the NF NX8 4-32 unless something comes out of the Shot Show...would like to see the NX8 in SFP, I think.
