300 SHERMAN vs "06

Did this rifle ever fire? I've been reading this thread for a couple years now and still no shooting results. I bought a 30-06ai off gunbroker last year with the intent of using it for a donor, however I made the mistake of shooting it. Wow I don't know who built this thing but it shoots great. I fireformed 100 rounds and developed a load with the 178eld-x showing no pressure at 3050fps, I was shocked! And that's not even the Sherman variety!

What length barrel is it?

If I had another 325, I would do a 26"-28". The 26" would let you get the 200 grain bullets over 3000 fps. The 180 Ballistic Tip over 3100, and the 160 will cross 3400.

@elkaholic
Well after much talking with Rich, the decision was made to build a 300 Sherman LA. Payment was sent to @Nick@Straight-Jacket tonight to get it started. I am looking forward to finishing out this thread.

The basics are a Rem 700 LA, #3 Bartlein, Calvin Elite, and Macmillan Game Warden. Shooting for this to be 8.5 pound scoped Mountain rifle.

So far,
I've got some H4350, RL22, and 26 to try, and maybe pick up some Big Game. For the bullets, some 175g Barnes LRX or 181g Hammers. Plan is to push them around 3k.

Congrats, should be one sweet rig!

Well the RWS brass and dies are here. Brass is necked up to .307. Lost 5 cases to split necks, that got expensive quick. Got a couple loaded with 180g Game Kings & 58g of RL22 to do the fire forming.

Going to be a while till I know what to seat them at, so for now they are just barely seated.

Hoping Santa brings those 181g Hammers I asked him for.

First, let's talk dimensions....is this a 270/280 Rem brass fireformed to 300 Sherman?

What is the shoulder angle, shoulder diameter, and neck length? Why are there no drawings out there to see this beast?

To form, can I neck 270/280 to 338, then anneal, then run that through a Whidden FL 300 Sherman die? What load are you forming with? Bullets or wax/cream of wheat? I'm not really interested in hydraulic forming.

Thoughts on Starline brass for this?

In the end, I get WSM or Win Mag performance? What is the recoil like?

I'm here thinking about 30-06 performance plus 100fps from a 22" barrel.

I'm sure Rich will chime in. You can use 270/280/280ai brass and neck it to .30. I have 180g throw away bullets loaded up to jam into the rifling at book 30-06 min charge. I will use these to break the barrel in. I am running RWS brass to get the max use out of the Fire Forming. The expectation is to run a 180 Mono at or above 3k.

I should have the rifle late February to start doing the testing.

Yes, 270 brass. You can neck to 338 as you said and then partial size to form a false shoulder. You can then either load and shoot or c o w form.
LOW body taper, 40 degree shoulder, .317" neck. Its proprietary and there is no formed brass
