6.5 Creedmoor for moose

Ive shot about 20 plus species with my bow.So yes it will work.Also been on alot of moose hunts and seen them knocked off there feet with things like 7 mag and get up and run off,or make it out to middle of swamp.Which is not fun trying deal with moose in 4 foot of water

Poor shot? You don't know my abilities nor was you there. First deer was under 100 yards. I put the cross hairs behind his shoulder propped up on a shooting bag. After the shot was made. I tracked where the deer ran as far as I could which was about 100 yards in thick south Mississippi woods. Pulled out of the woods and called my buddy to bring his track dog. We went over 400 yards tracking this deer with no blood trail. Unfortunately we never recovered the animal but every effort was made on both deers. I put that pile of junk in my gun safe and pulled out my 270. Guess what when I pulled the trigger on the third deer he dropped in his tracks. I can think of many different calibers far superior then the 6.5 Creedmoor for taking animals. 6.5 Creedmoor is a over hyped cartridge and needs to be left for competition shooting rather then taking game. Will it kill a animal? Yes it will no doubt about that. But is it a the right choice for taking game? No even close.

My guess is the ammo you were using in the .270 had different bullets than that used in the 6.5 CM. At 100 yards.. a 130 grain .270 has about about 2300 ft-lbs energy vs 1960 ft-lbs for the 129 grain 6.5 CM. Using Hornady's ammo spec's for comparison. I doubt a deer hit with either one with a proper bullet would know the difference.

I use a .25-06 which has 1960 ft-lbs with 117 grain at 100 yards equal to 6.5 CM energy but with a smaller hole. It is my primary deer and elk rifle and is pretty much a one shot deal for both. Have never had any issues killing both. Now I typically don't shoot them at 500 and 600 yard either. Usually between 75 and 350 yds. 150 is probably typical. I have a .270 a .30-06 and .45-70 but I am most comfortable using the .25-06. Have killed deer and elk with a 6 mm Remington when the opportunity presented it'self when that was the only rifle in the jeep.

I saw this buck hit today by a Ford 350
Super duty ! It tried to get up and it did get itself off the road. It probably went 180 lbs and as I walked up to it I could see how powerful this buck still was as the adrenaline ran through its body! Bull moose is how big 1200-140O lbs ? Sure if it all goes right light calibers will work well but what if it doesn't ? Look at the bucks skull it's severely fractured and it still was alive and dangerous.

Sorry I should have said that , yes that's why I stopped to see if they need help in putting this buck down . The game warden pulled in behind me and took care of this poor buck.

This is foolish. Last year we were hunting ducks. My daughter decided she wanted to go deer hunting. I didnt have a big rifle in camp. Only rifle i had was an AR loaded with 68gr hps for coyotes. I told her if she wanted to take it to be very careful with the shot. She shot a big doe. She said the shot was good and the deer ran into a field of head high geass. Not a drop of blood anywhere. Deer wert about 75yds and it took us three hours to find it. Bullet hit the deer dead center in the heart and cane apart. By your standards this would be adequate. Hunting moose with a creed is the exact same thing. Shooting that deer with the 223 was a bad idea and shooting moose with a little 6.5 is too. Just because it will kill him does not make it a good idea.

An Alaskan moose hunt for me would be a one in a life time adventure for me. so I would definetly take enough rifle to insure my success. I would take my .338-378 weatherby mag loaded with 250 gr. nosler accu bonds. I think that should prove adequate. The muzzle brake or the louder than average report will not hinder my shooting ability in the least bit. ctw (carl)

Adequate? Yes with an appropriate bullet. But there are better choices unless it's the only rifle option you own or have a problem with the recoil of a larger caliber.

FWIW I'm a fan of the 6.5 caliber. My sheep rifle is a 6.5 Swede on a Rem action (and it was a one shot kill) and my PRS rifle is a 6.5 Creedmoor. Both are very appropriate for their intended purposes. Neither would be my choice for moose.

The moose I shot needed to die right where he stood. Had he run even 75 YDS there would have been exponentially more work involved. I would say the same for the last several elk I shot. Dying elk go downhill usually, and usually that's right into some gnarly ravine. I always wonder if the proponents of using inappropriate cartridges for these animals have ever really been in that situation? I strongly suspect the answer is no.
