Hells Canyon vs PROOF

Have some experience with a couple Proof CF barrels. One on a 6.5's CM, the other a PRC.

The Creed barrel has close to 700 rounds on it and still making .5 to .3 with x5 plus rounds, depending on my day.

My brand new PRC tube was broken...Simple way of saying bad barrel received. Both rigs are full customs.

Proof Research CS was awesome! I explained the targeting issues I was experiencing over a couple months and the steps I did on my end to correct the accuracy issue, to no avail.

Proof CS said...."Sounds like you got a bad barrel"..."Where do you want a new one shipped to"?....Done!

If you've ever had a bummer barrel outta the box, and tried to explain the problem to a barrel maker, you typically get met with all sorts of finger pointing and did you do this or that questions until they push your temper button and things get phone frisky.

Proof just handled the situation in under 10 minutes. Excellent!

Note...If you're buying the components in advance to ship to a builder. You're likely going to be the one making the call for a problem part...Not, necessarily the builder.

One can assume that if your builder is a tier 1 recognized builder, any reputable parts manufacturers typically won't want to get sideways with these builders by saying to you "your builder messed up".
If you're doing it yourself or bubba's basement builders, Inc slapped your parts together, you might get some pushback from CS requiring more explanation of steps you took to correct the problem before the manufacturer gives in and ships you a new part....YMMV

I currently own a Proof and I love it . Looking at a HCA for my next one and it seems like they can be cut and threaded at any length. That makes me think that my muzzle device will be threaded and shouldered up on carbon fiber vs ss , is that correct?

I've never done it but it doesn't inspire a lot of confidence hanging a $2000 suppressor that took 13 months to get on carbon threads . Am I correct about HCA muzzle threads or am I mistaken?

The pics of HCA rifles I have seen have a section of stainless expose at the end that a muzzle brake would shoulder against. But I would think it depends on the finish length. If its a max finish length of 26", but you get it in 22", I assume that come off the end and would shoulder against carbon. That is only if the blanks are supplied with the carbon build up area preturned. If he is turning that section down himself he could make it however you like.

He's pretty easy to get ahold of on the forums, just message him.

Both of my HCA's are threaded at 22". The stainless liner is what is threaded, the brake is shouldered up against both the stainless barrel and the carbon. Carbon in that orientation, compression,. Is very strong. I wouldn't be the tiniest bit worried about the suppressor on the HCA

HCA can be lighter than Proof. In my opinion that is the number one reason to go carbon. I have owned both and accuracy is the same. HCA is using Benchmark blanks which are great barrels.

I have a few HCA barrels and love them. I love that you can finish the at whatever length you want to. The break does but up to the carbon but iv had no issues at all

I live in Canada, I don't have to many options that I know off.
Actually just about everything is easily available up here.
Bighorn sales or Mystic Precision import many barrels, Gary at Bighorn normally has a good selection of barrels in stock.
Insite arms or EM precision is the importer for Hardy barrels (dont remember which off the top of my head).

Yes it can be found. But I wouldn't say easily accessible. Plus we pay to much and wait times are to long. But what you gonna do. If you need parts you need parts. I'm thinking of doing a CF barrel for my next build. Don't know which one I'd go with.

I have some experience with the Benchmark carbon and the Proof Carbons . The two below are both 30 " 338 's left one is a 338 Rum Benchmark and the right is the 30" 338 Edge Proof . I can tell you the both perform Amazing !

I'm putting a 300 Rum together now with a Christensen carbon barrel.
Best of luck to you in your choice !

I too have a benchmark in a 280ai love it. I'm not up to speed as much as I should but heard benchmark no longer makes carbon barrels? I too will be rechambering a tikka 270 wsm to 6.5 PRC saum or SS and will be looking at a proof or HC. Didn't realize HC threads to the carbon that's interesting

Hells canyon makes carbon barrels and uses benchmark blanks

Gary has decent pricing but IA is crazy expensive. They build good rifles but their mark up is way to much for me

I'm going to send a tikka 300 win mag off to be rebarreled to either 7 SAUM or 6.5 SAUM/maybe PRC. Have 3 proof sendero light barrels, a 24" 7mm 8.4 twist 5R, and two 6.5 8 twists 20" and 22". Would be threaded for Ultra 7.
Question is, any reason to worry about the 6.5 barrels as they are 4 groove? Are the HCA barrels 5R?

A little late to the conversation, and maybe a bit off topic. But I've emailed HCA for some info and I haven't heard back. After having these same problems on some custom handguns I try to contact and see what kind of responses I get before giving my money away. What's the typical CS like with HCA??
