Thinking of a .277 for new build?

I would like to see a longer version of the SAUM, or maybe the RPM, that would fit a long action mag without getting in the 80 grain powder capacity. But real performance wise, the 150 vld at 3200 or the 170 at 3050 from a 24-26 inch barrel without the true need of a brake in a hunting weight rifle looks like a pretty big jump in horsepower from my 6.5 140 gr@2940. I loved the 300wm I built a few years ago (sold it for big profit) but without a brake it was pretty violent, and I don't really need a 215-230 grain bullet to get my work done. My 284 runs a 180vld @2930 so my 7mm base is covered unless I burn copious amounts of powder. I've built 26 noslers and hated them. 25cal I love but bullet selection just isn't there for bigger hogs at distance. This build is somewhat senseless I know, but I just want a fancier can opener.

Sounds like a great project. 270WSM with a 1/8 twist. My Rock Creek barrel is a absolute hammer. Speaking of hammers it would also be great with Hammer Hunters. Throat it long for the Berger 170s and Hammers. You will need a mag length of 3.125 to take full advantage of all this custom rig has to offer.
I tried Berger EOL 170 grain in my 270WSM 26" Brux 10" barrel. WOW. Good 1/2 moa groups with RE26. I called Berger for entail load data. They said it would work alright but the BC would be compromised by 7-9%. THe BC is still over .600. I like it so far but haven't stretched it out yet.

Didn't think a .270 winchester Ackley was a standard chambering? However I suppose you could just get a cheaper .280 Ackley bushing die set and get bushings for .270, for a full set that puts you around $200, not terribly far ahead of the custom Sherman Whidden dies, but you could also get just the bushing sizer and bushing for around $85-$90 (with bushing), and use a standard seater I suppose, and save some. Otherwise, the .270 Winchester Ackley dies are about the same as any other set of custom dies, which save you around $100 over the Whidden Sherman dies.

Either one would be a decent option though.

I was thinking these with the correct bushing...

There are many ways to skin this cat, if your staying on the long action the 270 WSM really, really works, I've built dozens of them, you can run a mild load in the 2900 fps range with a 170 and recoil is actually pleasant.
Built a pile of Sherman Wildcats so I really like the 270 Sherman, real similar performance to the WSM just on a standard bolt face.
I know some guys are kicking around a 270 MAX which is a Sherman design blowing out the SAUM which should be right in or just over the WSM but give you awesome ADG brass.
The 7 Blaser necked down is a solid option as well, very solid, I have not built one yet but have a reamer print ready.

Bigngreen, I knew you were THE MAN amongst men on this topic. In your opinion, is the Blaser going to yield any real performance gain over the WSM being both can have Norma brass and will most likely be on a long action in my case? Barrel life isn't a big concern, but I refuse to build something with a life of 500-800 rounds like the 26/28 noslers. What could I expect from the WSM in a hunting/practice situation where no more than 15-20 rds get shot any given day with proper cooling between 3 shot strings ?

I think the performance gain would be minimal, your looking at a 3 grain capacity difference, the Blaser has more room to have some wildcatting fun with it but then your again getting out of the build your wanting, it's a fun one to think about though!!
The 270 WSM is had to improve on for that middle ground of performance and recoil especially with the 170 Berger. My barrels have gone over 1200 rounds but that was being hard on them, I have one near 2000 rounds but it's lost some velocity and isn't accurate with but a couple bullets so being kind to it I bet your looking at 1400ish rounds.
For shear economics vs performance vs recoil the 270 WSM holds a solid spot for that everyday every use kind of rifle, though it's vanilla compared to like the 270 Sherman which is the performance king on a 06 case head, the 270 SS is also one I really like but is for a short action build where the WSM just won't fit properly.

270 Sherman max on a Tikka action running a hells canyon billet magazine. Get one his 1:8 twist carbon barrels while you're there. Put it all in a Mesa Precision altitude or ag composites alpine stock, and you'll have a very accurate and lightweight rifle for 2500$ max. I've got 2 soon to be 3 rifles done by Mike and they're all excellent!

They only let us hit like once so, I so dig this built!! I think the MAX vs the WSM comes down to maybe only brass BUT in these cases the brass and the reamer design lets you peg the awesome meter!!!
