what's that gonna set me back? I hate to waste the man's time if I have the wrong number of digits in my account!
 
If not a long range rig why would you get away from the ruger. I know a lot of guys don't care for the mounting system. I have a pretty good amount of m77s and all shoot good with factory ammo and most are .5 moa or less with hand loads. Got a skeleton stock that's untouched that will out shoot most $3k plus customs. I highly recommend a ruger. In my opinion they have the best safety too for the thick brush. Just a thought
 
Why not go with the H&H? If you ever hunt in Africa you can find ammunition in any store. You can probably get some at any farm house if you just knock on the door and ask. The H&H will kill any animal in North America just as dead as the Ruger will. The Kimber Talkeetna is an outstanding rifle as well.
 
I bought the Ruger in 375 Ruger to take to Africa in 2013. I really enjoy the rifle. I'm in no way a Ruger guy. I do have a few of there weapons and like them. I have the older Alaskan grey laminate stock 22" barrel and no brake. I never put a scope on it only ever shot it iron sights and it served me well. I too am not a fan of the scope mount but Alaska Arms makes some quick release rings. Them paired with a smaller low powered scope would let you have the option to get to your irons in a hurry if need be. A set up like this would let you get to 300 yards no problem. Shooting 300gr bullets the rifle is a bit bouncy with all the power a guy needs.
 
I've got a (LH) Ruger Guide Gun in 375Ruger. The action feeds, fires & ejects as good as you could expect from a non-custom rifle. It is also quite accurate at 300yds with Nosler 260gr Partition bullets.

However, a custom rifle is always more enticing if you have enough money to dedicate it to a 375.

I've a safe full of Ruger 77s and one Hawkeye, never a feeding issue at all! As for barrel length if you are doing a build you'll have the option for any barrel length that you choose. I suspect that you will get other great action recommendations, but have no problems with the Ruger 77 or Hawkeye platform to start out with. And...I think that the .375 Ruger is an excellent cartridge for your hunting requirements at the distances you would like to shoot at. Another good cartridge, that has been overlooked and never given recognition, is the .358 Norma magnum. Take a look at the ballistics on this cartridge, there's a great selection of good bullets (Barnes/Nosler/Hammer) that are available for this caliber. Brass is easy to make from 7mm RemMag brass fireformed or necked up to .35 caliber, the cartridge is very accurate and easy to load for; and, it will take any species of animal that walks North America. I am a fan of "ole school" unique, and find this cartridge appealing and oftentimes overlooked. Good luck with your build...........they're always fun to do!!

Something that I didn't address was the integral scope bases. I have had problems with the rings loosening up with the 35 Whelen, but....that's the rings and not the integral scope base. SOP is that I torque the scope rings every time that I go to the range or hunting.. but again this has only happened with the 35 Whelen and I have numerous cartridges in Ruger 77s.
