    Hello everybody I have been reading this form for some time and its educational and fun.
    I like to get some input on my next rifle.
    I have many center firing rifles starting at a 223 all the way up to a 50BMG.
    Most of these guns are in the 12 to 17 lbs range and I love all of them.
    When I was younger I did not mind dragging a 50 pnd backpack and a 15 pnd rifle up the mountain.
    But things have changed.
    We have a 3 month hunting season for years my main hunting rifle was a Ruger#1 in 375 H&H being LH,that is until I could afford a 340 Weatherby for the first part and a A bolt for when the weather got nasty.
    I still usually get my game(got a nice 3 year old Moose in the first week of the season) but I do find those heavy weighted 33 cal guns to be more and more cumbersome.
    One of my favorite small cal cartridge is a 308 Winchester I have a target rifle that does 77 mm at 500 but it weighs a ton.
    Sooo I know I carry on and on but I need someone to enlighten me.
    I tend to lean towards a Savage 110 storm I like the adjustable stock floating bolt head accutrigger aluminum bedding and easy replaceable barrel in LH.
    I would like decent acc to 500mtr and since this Grissly country looking at heavy bullets.
    So what is in between a 308 and a 33?
    I hear about a 300 PRC longer neck heavy bullets twist? ???
    Give me some ideas please.
    I walk my dog in remote areas but cant haul a 15pnd rifle for one hour

The .300 prc has a 30 degree shoulders. It allows as for better chamber geometry, as with all the prc's and creed.

Other than that, more case capacity than a win mag, not as much as a rum.
 
Norma 300WM brass and 300 PRC are all but identical case capacity.
Everything being equall there all but identical.

If I was looking for a lighter weight rifle with a good bit more punch than a 308 but didn't want the weight of a 340Wby, I would be looking at a 338-06, or a 35Whelen.

If I wanted a little more long-range performance, I might consider a 325WSM.

But either the 338-06 or the 35Whelen can perform well out to 400 yards. Maybe more.

My initial thought was a Savage storm in..... cal.
I like adjustable stock ,trigger,aluminum bedding,floating bold head, barrel change i can do myself and LH.
I am intrigued by the 300prc (correct me if I am wrong) which means longer throat and faster twist to accommodate the heavy bullets.
Does this cartridge require a longer action than the Savage storm?
I dont want to go to exotic in calibers since I have many hungry mouths (rifles) to feed and may not want to reload for it.
This has to be a LH rifle as well.
Ps :I do have a 338 06 die set but no rifle lol
and also a 350 RM in a FN Mauser (so I can seat the bullets out to where they belong) but its a RH.

Norma/Nosler(most capacious) 300 wm~95 grains h20
Hornady 300 PRC ~97
Nosler 30 Nosler ~99
Bertram 30 Nosler ~101
ADG 30 Nosler~102

These are all fired. I have posted this several times on the forum but some of what I posted was new brass.

If you took ten rifles of each cartridge the average would be separated by 50-100fps respectively based on max velocity. I think we all know just because you can push it there does not mean there will be accuracy there.

The throat dimensions are usually barrel maker specific. Remington's even in .308 typically have longer throats in general. You can run a 200 gr bullet if you wanted to. Twist is going to be barrel specific too. A 10 with work, a 9 would be better which the ruger precision comes with, 8 twist is pretty common with Christiansen arms.
Like I said, the prc is going to be shoulder angles and chamber geometry, with more case capacity then a .300 win but less than a .300 rum.

Not true. Most will use SAAMI. You may find some outliers but in our sue happy society MOST stick with SAAMI. It is, after all, why we have SAAMI in the first place. As far as twist many if not most American companies have started to deviate from SAAMI on twists as longer bigger for caliber bullets come around but still stick with SAAMI chambers(throats).

Yes it's true. Saami that you like to quote has a tolerance. That can be .001 to .00whatever gap. Depends on the company and their tolerances.

I quote it because it is THE industry standard. Unless you are going custom it is what every manufacturer that I am aware of uses. The tolerances are for mechanical imperfections and varying bullets. You and I could order two of the same reamer from two different makers and I gaurantee they would not cut the exact same freebore. Everything made by humans has a tolerance. It does not change the fact that they use SAAMI. You imply they are cutting with different specd reamers.
