First, I want to say that this is one of the best forums in the internet. It truly is a wealth of knowledge concerning all things long range shooting/hunting. I've been on here for quite awhile (~10 years) but recently I've noticed quite the change in the thread content and topics. Seems like the focus has been shifting more and more away from long range hunting/shooting to just simple general hunting and gun stuff...nothing really wrong with that but it seems to be driving the focus away from the prerogative of the site, and what drew me (and I'm sure others) here to begin with. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I want this site to remain the authority on long range hunting and continue to be the treasure trove that it is. Currently, however, I feel like we're really diluting the resource. Rant over.

I agree with you. Unfortunately I think a lot of the post on this page come because this is the forum that most people are looking to for answers, what they are identifying with. I know that is why I post here. Long Range Hunting is what I am into and I figure these are the guys that can give me the answers to the things I can't figure out on my own. Just my opinion.

Allen ,we all have to remember we all were young and dumb when we first started out ,I think its mainly the next generation of shooters coming up and we all must be aware of change (which you picked it up right off ,shows that you are always looking at the best of the best) We just need to listen and nurture the younger ones so what we want to preserve will pass to the next generation.Guess its all about the learning.Wish I had the time to tell you what all I have learned from you and others at LRH.Just thankful for great people and great advice.Thanks to all!

I doubt I will comfort you here, but forums evolve. Maybe what was once a certain age group of like minded people at some point needs to take on new members, and liking the outcome may become tougher. It is still a premier hunting site though.
I was in a conversation with the owner of Snipers Hide yrs ago, he made the statement that you cannot buy your way into what he called his game. I begged to differ, capable gun smiths are all over this country building accurate rifles. The tools available to learn are at your fingertips today. Whether at the reloading bench, apps for dopes, and the optics today.
What may have taken you years to learn or accomplish, people are doing the same in a fraction of the time and can be vocal about it, lol

You can't be on snipers hide without someone pulling out a measuring tape.
I don't see anything "wrong" with LRH. I see a lot more talk about gear and sharing hunting stories then the two mixing. Len tries to keep it on track with his articles, but guys want to talk about what they want to talk about.
I stumbled on this site about a year ago and have learned si much in that year. I am not into the long range(depending on what long range is), but enjoy the knowledge shared here. I think what brought me here originally, I was looking to build a new elk rifle and did a Google search. I quickly signed up and have gained more in this year than I had the previous 10+. But I would have to ask, what does long range hunting encapsulate? Is 400 years long range or does it kick in at 1000 yards? I guess we need a set of rules and referees to police the site.....wait we have those

Oh sorry, I know he references that a lot for his credentials. I like his YouTube videos, but I can't stand the forum. That's why I stay away.

I always read the forums to gather information. Over the last few years there were a lot of very knowledgeable people who would always chime in and help in anyway they can. But as mentioned the questions have some what changed now. Keep getting the same ol' what scope rings? reading a OCW or ladder test? what to torque a scope to? or my rifle wont zero at 100 yards with little to no information on the setup. Many get tired of seeing the same ol' threads and do not chime in any more. This is still one of the best sites on not only Long Range Hunting but also the art of Long Range Shooting and how to use technology and practice to combine the two.
I agree with the OP, not quite the same. I've been a member for 10 years and been reading several more than that. This use to be a site where not only did guys push their limits, but push THE limits. With all the new gucci gear (like LRF, ballistic calculators, bullet/powder technology, etc) I would really expect more. Now a days if I were to post on here that I'm going to break the 1500 yard limit on a deer, I would expect guys to tell me how unethical (that devil of a word) it is and how I do not "respect" the animal. It is still the best site on the internet and about the only one I partake in, I just skip over 99% of it until I see something that peaks interest. Other sites like "the hide" get skimmed over when I'm bored, but that is only to see what new cool guy gear is out there. That way I know what to expect these young Soldiers coming through my course to bring to try to get a leg up.

There have been some fairly epic threads on the hide concerning wind.
Anyone who actually shoots past 500 yards with regularity knows just how critical the wind is.
The comparative lack of discussion here leads me to believe one of two things:
Either most here have the wind thing totally figured out...or few here shoot far enough for it to matter.

It's hard to decipher on the internet who does and who does not but one thing u can take to the bank, there is no shooting app in the world that can teach u to read wind. I think most of the guys on here put the trigger time in on reading wind with mirage, vegetation etc. I am a member on the hide also and there seems to be way more actual shooters on here then the posers on the hide. Don't get me wrong there are some shooters there also and once u play awhile on that forum u can pick them out but many many more on this site that shoot real world conditions at distance.

1) The forum hasn't changed as much as we change: I used to consume everything on the LRH and was often directed here in my google searches. However, I have learned "too much" and I understand long range shooting and ballistics and guns and ammo etc... to a much greater level than I even knew existed 7 years ago. That has quelled my curiosity and I don't search and read like I used to. I don't ask the same questions anymore because I already know the answers.
2) Most people don't shoot enough to encounter anything new to talk about. Much of the talk on this site and others is about gear not using that gear. Why? Because you can share you opinions on what cartridge is better or your favorite scope bla, bla, bla without ever owning or using that stuff. If people were actually going out and shooting they could talk about reading cross wind or dealing with vertical shifts from tail winds or shooting in mirage or other skill related topics.
3) Long range shooting is now mainstream and that shift happened almost over night. This used to be a group of people seeking refuge from the wagging fingers of 30-30 wielding backwards thinking individuals who shamed anyone for taking a shot at an animal past 200yds. Now more and more 6.5 creedmoor owners google "long range hunting" and find the forum and use it like Facebook as a platform to talk about the food they had for lunch and the color of their fanny pack. The core group has been reduced to a few serious shooters who take their actual equipment out and use it verses the masses who post pictures they downloaded from google to get likes on their posts.
What can we do about it?
Go shoot and tell the story
