28nosler issues

Not looking to pick a fight here, seriously now, just wondering why you guys go through so much trouble with the 28....barrel life, extra recoil, issues like in this thread, longer barrels, etc when essentially you are only gaining 250+-FPS over the 7mm Rem Mag. 250fos is the velocity of a Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun.

Think about that;)

For me I think it's about extended reach with big bullets, a.k.a. power.
Like my dad used to say about power, if some's good, more's better?

Why bother with a 7 mag, you're only gaining 150 fps over a 280 AI. Why bother with a 280 AI, you're only gaining 150 fps over a 7-08? Etc, etc, and on down the list.

what barrel twist and load are you using to get 3100 in the 180's?

I'm thinking of going with 180 eldm's and H1000.
Factory X-bolt, 9 twist. Don't remember the exact charge, but somewhere in the 76 range if memory serves correct.

I got caught looking at the amazing ballistics of the 28 nosler. After the first 80 rounds started load development and 75 virgin brass. Accuracy was amazing and was pumped. Fast forward to all these problems I should have gone 300 win with 215 Berger's and not given up much in ballistics.... I will take everyones recommendations and see what I can do over the next week. Hoping to have it figured out by my hunt the first week of November for elk & mule deer

Just base your new load with brass that has been fire formed and you'll be all good. If using RL-33 just clean every 25-30 rounds. If you don't want temp swing pressure sensitivity or a dirty powder then go with H1000 and 180's.

May want to think about using the Hornady 180 ELD-M though. There are people who have many instances (including me) where they're blowing up in the air, but plenty of others don't. I don't want to side track this thread so do a search, under my name if you want. I would hate for you to replace a problem with another problem. I've been through both the high pressure issues with fire formed brass vs. virgin and the 180 ELD-M Blowing up in the air with my 28 Nosler. It was a miserable first year after I finally received my full custom rifle trying to work out all the dang problems. I second guessed the cartridge too. But once I figured it out and realized it is what it is, I'm happy in the end with it.

My Retumbo and 195's shoot amazing and others I know running H1000 and Berger 180's are scary accurate and work well on game. When I get around to it I'll build the H1000 and Berger 180 load to replace my current and call it good. Overall with the extra speed I'll be getting from the 180, ballistically I'll be better off anyways.

Yes I've heard of the 180 eldm's blowing in the air. If I go the 180 route I'll keep them gentle and go for the lower node.... I want high accuracy and low SD numbers. I still think the ballistics with 180's at 3050/75 will be great out to 1000. That's plennnnty of distance for hunting. After I get back from the hunt I will push the limits a little harder.

I'm at a point I might try factory but my chamber was cut for the longer bullets. Might just try a box to of ABLR's to see how they group since time is getting close. Hell I might just have to bring my 6.5cm and limit everything to 500 yards or in.

+1 on the 180 ELD-m mid air blowup. I was running them at 3200 with RL33, several times the 3rd shot in a 3 shot group would poof in mid air. Personally, I'd do the 180 Berger and be done with it.

Some shooting less than 3,000fps with a 7mag happened as well. To me it's just not worth it in a hunting situation. Especially since you're having issues now, why potentially complicate it more?

It's your choice though, I had to learn the hard way and have dealt with your exact same issues and the other issue you're thinking about taking on. I too was caught up in the crazy high BC Hornady publishes with their new lines that's somewhat deceiving when comparing to Berger. Good luck with your hunt.

I get your point but it seems like allot of trouble once you go from 7mmRrm to the 28. Having 800 round barrel life, and things such as the title of this thread...all for 200FPS?

no thanks

Not even 200 fps at times, with Reloder 26, 3000-3050 fps with a 26-28" barrel and a 180 is not uncommon. And you will get more velocity if you throat a 7mm rem mag properly for the heavier bullets.

I almost built a 28, until I started seeing lots of threads like this. This forum is a great resource.

To the o.p.'s original issue....as others have stated, try scrubbing the bore, or even better, take it to a smith and have them look at it to see if there is a carbon ring, so you can know for sure what the issue is, then proceed from there. I would also (as others have stated) consider changing powder to something that doesn't cause as many issues.

I hear you and that's why I stayed with my 7mmRem. I'm getting 2,815 from 63.5gr of RL23 with 175gr ABLR's. 26" barrel with a break...recoil is nothing.

I just shot through the shoulder bone of a zebra at 180 yds with the bullet penetrate both lungs and found under skin on far side....I'd say that it is "powerful enough "

But I do get the 28 guys who want every FPS that they could get...like car guys who put thousands into there cars for a few extra horsepower

To each his own

28 is a great caliber with awesome ballistics with the 195. It does however have to be treated a little differently to keep it shooting..

I have personally have to clean the carbon ring every 25-30 shots and things are stable but if you go beyond that you are going to start to see spikes in pressure.. It doesn't matter the powder, N-570, H-1000, Retumbo, R-26 They all produce the same carbon ring.

The first four inches of the chamber if stroked with A parker Hale type Jag with IOSSO and kroil will remove this ring. If it stubborn then a brush with IOSSO and kroil spun in the first few inches hooked into the end of a drill will take it out.

I have even used Lucas Injector cleaner to loosen very stubborn rings mixed with kroil.. 1 part kroil, 3 parts lucas injector cleaner.. NO harm to barrel verified by bore scope.
Keep it cleaned this way every 30 and you will be happy with the 28 Nos.. Let her get dirty and you will spend all your time "bitching" about the pressure spikes.

As far as 150-200 fps I am not even going to touch that subject.. Everyone here has the shooting addiction and" different strokes for different folks."

Hope this helps Amigo..
