I have spoken with a few gunsmiths about building a rifle using a Model 70 action. But i keep getting the same response. If it is not a Remington 700 or Remington clone, they want nothing to do with it. I am just curious is this something common among all gunsmiths?

Nothing is easier than a push feed M70 action. 1" 16 tpi tenon threads with a flat breech. Super simple. Most don't want to deal with the claw extractor cut on the Mauser style actions but as posted above LRI will do it for you.

A lot of Smiths like to specalize their work, that way they don't have to change their equipment/tooling up. This allows them to put out more work with less effort, and a really good GS usually has more work than time. So it isn't hard to understand why they choose to work with what is most popular.

Kevin Weaver of Weaver Rifles built my M70 Stainless Stainless Classic .338-06. If you don't mind working with a guy who isn't local to you, he's a great guy to deal with. He always has a lot on his plate, but he'll work on pretty much any rifle. Talk to him and round up all your parts beforehand. Ship everything when he's ready for it, and his turnaround time is usually very quick.

BTW what are you planning for your build?

Thinking about a 6.5-280 Ackley or another 280 Ackley

They are gunsmiths out there that will be glad to work on your model 70. Hillcountry rifles has done work for me in the past but they are others out there. I'm sure they are guys on this forum that can send you in the right direction. Good luck

If a gun smith tells you he doesn't want to mess with Model 70 they are saying they are too busy and have plenty of work and don't need to mess them or they lack the knowledge to work on them. Either way go find another Smith.

Any 'gunsmith' worth his salt, that really is a gunsmith, should have no problem with a Winchester Model 70, push feed or CRF.
