270 Win ?

30-35yrs ago, when I first started this reloading and LR thing, the .270 Winchester was the standard by which most cartridges were measured against and compared to for Long Range ballistics!
Sure you had the 7mmRemMag and .30WinMag, and both outperformed the .270, but if a cartridge was being evaluated there was a .270 thrown in for comparison.
I shot one for years, killed a lot of deer with it and have recently acquired another. The only thing the .270 ever lacked was the availability of better bullets and a longer barrel.

That universal 1;10 twist kind of crippled the cartridge, determined it would never be what it could have been. That being said, the fact that all .270s have the same twist and pretty much all .270 bullets are optimized for that twist, and the fact that for a long time the .270 win was the only 270 cal cartridge in existence and so projectiles of that diameter were and are built specifically around it's expected impact velocities, all work together to make it about the the least finicky round to shoot and load for and buy factory ammo for in existence in my opinion. It doesn't have a reputation for benchrest accuracy, but I've yet to see one that took much fiddling around to get good accuracy with a wide variety of bullets loaded to full power velocity. It's a cartridge that doesn't know it's not a magnum :)

Thank you all for your input, i knew it wasn't going to take much to sell me on it. The rifle I'm looking at is the 700 CDL SF. Im a sucker for wood and stainless.

Nothing wrong with the 270. Since I'm more a short-action guy I hang in the 7mm-08, 284 Win range. Yeah, I know the bullet is slightly different.

Cut my teeth on Mod 70 in 270 when I was a teenager. Sold it later in life and missed shooting a 270 and finally found a Ruger Red pad a few years ago and it's a tack driver with 130gr BTSP. A lot more accurate than my former Mod 70. .5 a .7 groups at 200 yds is the norm for the Ruger.

Guys I didn't mean a 270 would not kill elk , I was leaning for not a perfect elk round for most people

I have a 270, yes it is the Winchester 270 WSM left handed, I use it for elk hunting in Utah. So far, lots of miles carrying, season is in a few weeks, that will change. IMG_0259.JPG

Started my hunting career with a pre-64 M70 .270win. It's the family gun. Bought by my great grandfather brand new in 1948. I'm the 4th generation to have it. The down side for 270 is the 6.5 has better B.C. on the same weight bullets the 270 was meant to shoot. 130s and 140s. I found 150s were a bit heavy for mine. It seems more higher BC offerings are starting to show for 27 cal.
