i have a standard Winchester model 70 chambered in 7mm rem mag. I intend on completely rebuilding this rifle, going to get new barrel , new stock, and maybe even a completely new Montana rifle co. Action. But where do I start? First thing I'm buying is a vortex viper pst gen 2 scope. But I don't know if I need to buy a single point cut rifled barrel next? Or do I get the stock next? I seen some McMillan stocks only have stocks made for certain barrel contours. Therefore I don't know what should be my next purchase... any help would be great!

First Hello. It sounds like almost a whole new rifle you want? Are you changing calibers?
I might play with what you have.. bed the stock and a new trigger.
While doing my research and rounding up parts for your build.

Welcome to the forum! Lots of good information around here.

I would decide on which action you want to use. Do you want to try and make the Win model 70 work? That's not a popular choice but it can be used.

Next choose a barrel. There are many good barrel manufacturers these days. What will you be using this rifle for? That will help determine what barrel profile to get.

You'll want to choose a nice trigger and scope base & rings. Maybe a muzzle brake too.

Then choose a stock/chassis. Many to choose from these days.

Buy your scope and an aftermarket trigger. You may need to bed it depending on how well it shoots. Shoot it until the barrel is toast. By then you will not only know what you need, more importantly know what you want. You have a good rifle.

THanks verybody. I got the vortex viper pst gen 2 scope and installed a new lighter trigger spring. Still need to mod the trigger some more because it's still about 4lbs. After the trigger is fixed, I will shoot the crap out of it until I get good, as advised, and after that I will order my McMillan stock and either hawk hill barrel or Krieger barrel

I've done almost all my rifles as retrofit progressions. With the options available today, that's not a course of action I recommend unless you have affinity for the action. It is likely you will end up putting money in to true the action and then the first time you use a 60 deg action, you'll end up wanting one of those. With what you would get from selling your current rifle, and what you would put into having it trued, you are most of the way to a custom action.
