I just have a custom 28 Nosler built and was wanting to pick everyone brain a bit. I've read a ton of other threads on LRH as well as other forums but haven't seen any super recent data with proven results. I know @rpierce has had a ton of experience and I have chatted with him a bit. Let me know any and all information you have on 28 Nosler loads with heavy bullets.

As always, every rifle/chamber is very different so EXTREME caution should be used if you are not following the reloading manual's guidelines and always start low and slowly work up in load development.

Here is my current rifle and reloading setup:
  • 26inch bartlein SS barrel 1:8 twist
  • Chamber is throated for 190s with 0.260 freebore
  • Max OAL with 195 Berger EOL is 3.731" (about .4" longer than SAAMI for more powder capacity)
  • Max CBTO with 195s is 2.976"
  • FL sizing and bumping shoulder 0.002
  • Neck tension .0015-.002
  • Brass: ADG brass
  • Primer: CCI250
  • My target velocity with 195gr is between 3000 and 3150fps.
I have both Hornady 180gr ELD-Match and Berger 195gr EOL bullets that I would like to work up loads for. I have 1lb of Reloader 33 (RL33) but am open to trying other powder. I have not fired the rifle and all of the brass is brand new.

What are some 28 Nosler loads with heavy bullets and what results are you guys seeing? I hope to start load development on my rifle next week and would love some advice and save some $ on powder/bullets.

Again for anyone who skipped it before, every rifle/chamber is very different so EXTREME caution should be used if you are not staying within the reloading manuals guidelines.

Reloder 33 and N570 are really the best two powders. I have a rifle built by Ryan Pierce and it's an unbelievable rifle. I have done a considerable amount of shooting with my first 28 Nosler and this one is my second. I recommend that you use the 195s and either use one of those two powders. Don't mess with anything else, you will burn that barrel off of it before you know it. Start at 84 grains of reloder 33 and work up to 88. Mine likes it at about 3100fps, I have 8 pounds of N570 but didn't mess with it yet. I clean the barrel every 25-30 rounds. Reloder 33 is dirty.

Ok perfect. That's what Ryan told me too. Were you noticing accuracy being affected after 25-30 rounds? Or just a lot of carbon build up? What's your cleaning process after 25-30 rounds?

Keep an eye on carbon rings with RL33, it's know to be dirty unless you can get it pressured up quickly(close to lands with oal helps this) it also demonstrates pretty large swings in fps as temperatures range. If it's strictly hunting rifle, chances are it won't see high temps unless very early season. Run a ladder with it. Chances are there is a 1 grain spread which will yield similar speeds and poi, it's very forgiving in that aspects with Ryan's chambering. N570 has a smaller node but it's very stable in all temps and gets very good velocity as well. Ryan built my 300 norma imp and it's a fantastic rifle.

I have loaded for 19 different 28 Noslers.
Nosler or ADG brass, most built by either Axisworks or Piercision Rifles
Started with CCI BR2, but have switched to Fed GM215M for the last 7 or 8 with fantastic results
83.0 to 89.0gr RL33
195 Berger EOL mostly (a couple w. 197 SMK or 184 F Open)
2.960 to 3.005" CBTO (.055 to .010" jump)
3065 to 3160fps
All under .4MOA, out to 1000+

Keep a careful eye out for pressure spikes in warm weather with R33. I had to switch to H1000 in my 28, my awesome load that I developed with R33 at about 60 degrees turned into a hard bolt lift at 85. If it's a hunting rifle, I'd skip R33.

Here is a 3 shot group at 100 yds with mine. I ran it up to 3180 fps but settled on a node at 2980 due to the accuracy I am getting and hopefully better barrel life.

Surprised we dont see more N570 load recommendations.
I think that's because none of us could find it for so long. All I could find was reloader 33 when I had my 28 built. I finally bought 5 lb of n570 a while back but haven't had a chance to load any of it yet.

Anxious to hear loads as more 570 users come about. I got 12 lbs to start loading in my rifle. I have about 40 rounds of factory loads through it so far, but I'm about to load up some 195s as it was built for them.

I have a 30 inch barrel on a Savage shooting 180 grain Lapua target bullets in a 28 nosler. I use 83 grains of Retumbo and get 3330 fps. I tried the 195 Berger's but couldn't get the fps I wanted.
