Weatherby's New 6.5 RPM

The 90 degree bolt lift is a problem only in the minds of a Weatherby aficionado. I cringe when I use my Savage.
It's actually a problem, with the optic designs we are seeing getting a scope mounted properly for the user and still have proper bolt function is getting a little difficult. The lower throw of three lug actions is becoming a real advantage!!

has anybody heard anything on brass availability or is it going to be factory ammo.
already have a 300 and 338 that might be interesting for wildcats

I have the 6.5-257wby reamer and it makes a very much improved 257wby. You can still shoot 100 or 120 grain bullets. But faster. Then the bc is so much higher on the 6.5. At 600 yards the 257 has 1200 foot pounds. The 6.5 Has 1300 ft pounds at 1000 yards. I really love my 257wbys but why can't they do a tweener bullet? Take a 105 6mm with a 550 bc and blend the 6.5 140 with a 650 bc together. Should be a 600 bc 117 gn. But there is nothing close to that. I have 115 gr match 257 that have a 520. 25 will always be a proverbial redheaded s__p c___d until bullet maker do some high bc bullets. I think the 6.5 wby will sell good. Basically a modded up 6.5-06ai. Shep

Won't do anything in a normal 257wby. What's it need a 7 twist. So you can't run it in any factory 10 twist. Some early 257s had factory 12 twist. A bullet in the 117 weight would Probally only need the 10 twist unless it was all copper and really long. Shep

I'm well aware of the requirements for this particular bullet since I'm shooting it in nothing short of five different cartridges and five different barrels.

The post is a hypothetical question comparing the two cartridges with bullets having higher BCs. It is not a discussion of existing rifles with slower twist rates. The suggestion of the 131 gr. Blackjack is on par with that hypothetical question as a suggestion without having the twist discussion by merely adding that idea into the discussion. Just something to think about and consider, that's all.;)

Have a nice Day!:D

So what twist rates are you shooting them in?
Will 25-06 with 10 twist work?

I was excited when they came out because 257 wby was my favorite cartridge. Having a 7 twist would kind of limit you to use that one bullet. However my new favorite is the 6.5 on the 257 case. Standard 8 twist will shoot all weights. Especially the 140 class and up. So now I shoot a .351 g7 bullet at 3300 to 3350. What kind of speeds are you getting out of a 257wby with the 131. I bet both cartridges are very similar in performance with the 131. While the 6.5 version blows a 257 version away with normal bullets. I might give them a try. I have 2 257wby reamers and of course a 257WSM. Just need a 7 twist barrel to pop up. Shep

The barrels necessary to make this bullet perform are available on the Blackjack website:

Using a reamer of my own design along with some help from the reamer maker;), I can manage somewhere in the neighborhood (+/-) of 3,300 fps at the upper node on the curve. This can be achieved with two powders or 3,250 fps. with four powders, again at the upper node. Either way, it works when I want to ring some steel at 1,000 yards or take it hunting. Oh, it's a 26" barrel.

The 6.5 on the .257 Weatherby case is one of the most popular cartridges I get requests for. I have probably 4 different variations of reamers with a fifth design on the way. It's easy to tune and makes a great hunting cartridge. I pretty much stick with the 130 class bullets since I can stay under the 140s performance-wise.

I'm very much confused on how to asking about a 6.5 RPM has bled into a "discussion" about action sizes? This is from weatherbys website. "The 6.5 WBY RPM is based on a lengthened version of the existing 284 Winchester. This cartridge has a rebated rim, making it compatible with standard 30-06 bolt faces". So it seems very much like a "lengthened 284 would definitely be a long action. Especially with with long modern 6.5 bullets and Long COAL that modern long range bullets tend to like. And 30-06 is and always will be a long action.
