I have a browning Hells Canyon speed upgraded to a McMillan stock in 6.5cm. This gun shoots really good. Not sure if I got lucky, or the McMillan is enough of an upgrade to make it shoot better. I have a composite stalker in .308 that will shoot inside of MOA but not by much. Those of you with a HC speed in 6mm cm how are they shooting for you? Is there a feeling the HC Speed's maybe shoot a tad better than the standard x-bolts. Thinking of picking up the 6mm cm or building a rifle and if I just pick up a browning do you normally gain a bit of accuracy with the HC Speed vs regular xbolts??

I wanted an X-bolt with the McMillan stock, but I am left handed. I think the only one made was for the catalog pic. I am in the process of "building" one.

X-bolt Hunter - 30-06
Timney trigger
McMillian Game Scout stock

The only thing left is the barrel. This is where I keep getting stuck. I can't decide if I want a fluted Bartlein 3B or a Hell's Canyon Armory carbon fiber wrapped barrel.

I would love to hear everyone else's thoughts.

Firstly: I'm excited that I figured out how to quote more than one post at a time...

I don't know that you actually get more out of a HCS than any other flavor of X-Bolt. That being said, I think there may be more of a difference between 6 CM and 6.5 CM than between .308 and 6.5 CM? Either way I think you're largely splitting hairs, and that you're likely simply duplicating one end or the other of the 6.5 CM's (that you already know shoots well) capability spectrum. So do you have a reason for another rifle?

Personally: a Bartlein. And unless you're shooting long strings (not likely in a .30-06), I'd go with a #2b. Barring the need to hang a suppressor and play the weight/stiffness balancing game, I'd go with the steel.

I think the HC rifles have hand lapped barrels, and the standard x-bolt doesn't?

According to the Browning website the HC McMillan has a heavy sporter contour and the HC Speed has a sporter contour. I was thinking that the heavy sporter was similar to the Bartlein #3B and the sporter was similar to the #3. Is this close to being accurate? I never really considered the #2B. I was afraid that it would be too slim.

On another note - I will also be changing calibers to either a 6.5 x 55 or a good ole .270. I already have 2 6.5 CM's, but I really like the long action version of the CM and how can you not love the tried and true .270?

At the risk of furthering your hijack of the OP's thread...

I know the heavy sporter is nearly identical to the #3b - I have both and they're pretty dang close. From what I've seen, I think the sporter is closer to the #2.

As for caliber, there are rare states that limit hunting of XX species to YY cal. Ex: KY - one cannot hunt elk with a .264". I think it's .27" or above? So a .270 or .284 of some variant is just the ticket there. And since a 6.5x55 essentially duplicates your 6.5CMs, why do another?

bbckfh. - you are correct, I did.

mobenzowner - I am guilty of highjacking your thread. I apologize.

You're fine. I have enjoyed the additional reading. I'm a bit of a DIY guy but don't really wont to get the go - no go gauges, vises, etc it would take to do a build on a savage action and am thinking of going Browning HC speed route. Therefore the additional conversation is not a bother or detraction to the intent of my original post.

I own a Browning x-bolt in 6mm cm It shoots lights out, better than 6.5 cm. I think it is the cartridge more than other factors. wind drift with lighter bullet is sometimes an issue. I am a Browning fan.

I do not own the rifles that you speak of but you mention 308 and 6 mm the 6 mm is much more accurate I believe that is the biggest difference

I finally got all of my parts together and headed off to Justin at Spinner's Fit and Chamber.

When he gets though I will have my very own "unicorn".

Left Handed Browning Hell's Canyon McMillan chambered in .270 Winchester.

Let the bashing begin......................
