Best scope under $600

I just recently purchased a browning X-bolt white gold medallion in maple with octagon barrel and am looking for a scope. I live on the east coast so 500 yards max. Mainly got it for plinking with occasional varmit. I've been looking at nikon monarch, zeiss conquest v4 and meopta meopro.. Any others you like or really any help is good help.. only think I need is price under $600

A few questions I think need to be asked/thought about, some you failed to mention:
1. What caliber is the rifle?
2. What animals do you intend to hunt now and the future?
3. Do you want it set up for long distance shooting or not?
4. Do you want illuminated reticles?

There is a huge difference of options when one doesn't know those answers. There are a lot of good options in the $300-$600 range but I'd think about all the possibilities you might use the rifle for in the future. Years ago I bought an xbolt for a Canadian deer hunt in 300 win mag. I put a good scope on it then--a Leupold--VX3L 4-16 x 50, but changes over the next 10 years has seen me on hunts in Europe, and 4 trips to South Africa, this last one ending a month ago. In the process I got better at long distance shooting and with the changes in that came a need to go to a turreted CDS Leupold scope. I now feel fairly confident in shots out to 500+ yards. I never would have thought the option to hunt those places would have occurred, but they did, and while I took animals at over 4300 yards with the old scope, it involved a lot of guessing and luck!

Although you live in the East, everything will change once you include planning for a hunt in the West, Europe or Africa. It will also change when you add animals that are usually seen in edges/last or first light. A perfect example is the African bushbuck that often is hunted at night, but can be taken in the shadows and thickets if you can pick them out. I hunt a lot for wild pigs in the south, and there having lighted cross hairs makes a world of difference in the last 1/2 hour of shooting light when trying to anchor a solid black boar.

So try to answer those questions first, and then start looking for glass. Maske certain yo actually look through the scope before buying it, preferably on someone else's gun at the range. The adjustments to you eye you can make, and your ability to see are more important than fancy claims and specs. Look through a 42mm and 50mm and compare light collection for low light conditions. If you want to repost with your answers I could give you a better idea of what might work.

Vortex Crossfire ll best bang for your buck. Great for zero to seven hundred yards with ease and for $600 you could almost buy two so you have one for another rifle. The take abuse and still track just fine. Great scope for hunting or plinking without taking your paycheck. Buy one and spend the rest of your $600 on ammo.

Nikon Black X1000 6-24x , and it's actually on sale right now for $450, I paid $650 for mine. I liked it so much I've bought two of them and considering a third since they are on sale. Fantastic scopes especially at this sale price. In fact you can get the FFP version, the FX1000 under $600 right now. Don't miss that deal.

Look
My Athlon Ares BTR 2.5-15x50 FFP MOA arrived today from Midway. Was $420 after tax. It's a heck of a lot of scope for that money.

I also have a Bushnell Engage 4-16x50, which I scored for an insane $260 around Black Friday with a rebate. It is VERY good for that money, and even at the "good deal" price of about $350. My buddy has a 2.5-10, and it's great too. Nothing fancy, but very good glass, functional reticle and turrets (they lock down nicely).

Not sure why they're blowing them out, but Midway USA also has as pretty wicked sale on a couple of Bushnell Nitro and Forge scopes. $400 Forge 3-18x50 SFP, and $425 Forge 4.7-27x50 SFP, $225 4-16x44 Nitro SFP and $325 Nitro 5-20x44 FFP. I've heard very good things about them, and have had nothing but good things to say about the 2 Bushnell's I've owned.

For your needs, I think the Athlon would be hard to beat if you like first focal plane and want illumination. If you prefer a 2nd focal plane scope, The 3-18 Forge would be pretty darn good too. My guess is the optics are better on the Forge than the Athlon, but who knows.
I went through 4 Athlon Argos btr and a bunch and I mean a bunch of ammo said the heck with it bought a Vortex and have had no issues. I wouldn't waist my time or money on an Athlon

I've got a Burris XTR II 3-15x50 that is refurbished by Burris and has not been mounted since. It looks brand new with box, no marks at all, and would be a great scope for what you are seeking. This one was over $1000 new. I would take $600 shipped. Burris has a lifetime no questions asked warranty that will transfer to new owners. Buy it once and forget about it for life. Glass on this one is as good as it gets. My son shoots Nightforce and this one is as clear and bright as those. Really a quality scope.

You didn't mention the caliber, but from your post I thinking it's on the lighter side.

I would definitely steer away from Athlon scopes when shooting heavy recoiling weapons. Ive gone through 2 "Helos" scopes on my 7Mag - the parallax can't handle the recoil.

Plenty of great choices by other LRH members. Also consider buying a used or on sale 30mm tube, 50mm objective lens (i.e. brightness) $800 Vortex, Leupold, Athlon, Burris, Meopta, etc. All have lifetime warranties, so buying "used" has no risk. Make a list, go to an outdoors store, and try several scopes out outside at dusk. I'd highly recommend including a Burris Veracity 3-15x50 scope in your demos

Many decent scopes are in this price range but personally for $600– I'd take a good look at Sig. Glass is pretty dang clear, illumination and and good magnification in the Whiskey and Tango 4 lines from them. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Is 56mm to big to look nice?
