338 Edge Reloading...?'s

Couple of things with 33....

First, it's very unstable the higher temps it sees. I mean off the charts unstable. I shoot it in a couple of my rifles and I have to back it down 2+ grains to keep pressure down in the summer. My custom 300 rum shoots 100 grains in the summer, 102.5 in the winter.
Second, I found that 33 will leave your barrel super dirty after a few rounds. To the point where you will loose accuracy after 6 shots.
Third, the increased velocity will likely wear your barrel much faster. I'm seeing this in my 300 rum.

33 is a great powder for velocity and accuracy if you like a rifle that loves to be pushed hard. I would try using the Berger Bullet seating chart. If anything it will dial your bullet to where the gun likes it with 33. My 300 rum likes the bullet .010 off the lands with 33.

I have some other posts on the site that I tested 33 in it's infancy. It was incredible in the North Dakota winter, but it was scary unstable in the North Dakota summer.

(I normally only use 285 ELD-Ms...so this info is inregards to that bullet)

Any of you guys done some shooting in your 338 Edge with VV570?
Does this powder like alot of pressure to work the best?
I can get velocity out of it, but the accuracy was hit and miss, so to speak...
In my 338 Edge, H1000 is not finicky at all in varying powder loads and pressures...
it's just accurate throughout a wide range of powder charges/velocities...
but 2820-2850 fps is the best node for sure...

So how about VV570? Bring the pressure up?
How about compressed loads?
Any problems with quick pressure spikes with this powder once you get to a certain point?
Thanks

I can speak to 338 Rum and 338 Texan. I use N570 in both of these rifles. Very stable high velocity powder that shows excellent accuracy. I have not found any factor that has changed it's characteristics. Temp stable, compresses nice and burns all the way through. Only cons are that it's mildly expensive and currently very hard to find.

Any new updates on this? I have a similar problem with my edge. Shooting 83.5 - 84g of h1000, 1 out of 5 rounds will stick. Been doing some reading and i am just starting to bump the shoulders back. Only 2 - 3 shots in this brass and have gone through a ton of very expensive brass since i got this gun. It was built with a skinny neck reamer (.367) that hs been a pain in the royal butt the whole time. Trying to figure out how to turn necks to the proper size so the neck would open during firing, i have over pressured the rifle a few times.
Accuracy has been ok, but not great.

What is a good starting load for this powder

I use 92.5 vvn570 300 Berger elite Hunter 2940fps no pressure signs very accurate. Anneal every time and bump shoulder back every reload. I use ADG brass only very temp stable load shoots great in the summer at 90+ and down to -20 during late elk season. I have had pretty similar results with retumbo just loose 50-60 fps

Ok, i was using retumbo but seemed a little temp sensitive. Plus last year i think i had some bad primers. I would pull the trigger and have anywhere from a 1-3 second time lapse before the round would go off.

You have definitely got something going on there. That sounds kinda low on the H1000 charge, with 250-300 grain bullets. Mine was using 90-91 grains with 300's and my buddy's runs a touch more.

I am working with a friend from here now. Trying some different resizing techniques since my rifle is odd.

Myself and a couple buddies shoot 93 grains H1000 with 300's. But they are single shot actions. 4.1"+. If you have a tight neck (367). I would either neck up ADG 300 rum or Norma 300 RUM and you might not have to turn. My 338 Edge ADG brass is .365 loaded round unturned.

Jayson has been helping me. I have s 3 shot group now at just over .25"
I want to say, Jayson is one hell of a guy. If you havent had the chance to meet him, i suggest you do! Very knowledgeable and easy to chat with. He has given me a look at what this rifle can really do!!
