What have folks found for a good magazine solution to the increased overall length of a 28 Nosler shooting heavies such as Berger's 195's? I really prefer a detachable magazine but can make do with a floor plate if that is the only option for reliable feeding. I am considering a partial build that still needs a stock and looking at ordering a laminated Boyd's thumb hole, but not sure what bottom metal configuration to have them cut the stock for. Personally I can't stand a full internal magazine that has to be loaded and unloaded through the top. I'd rather just have a single shot. Been shooting all my life but I am just getting into the world of wildcat rounds and custom rifles so some of this is still new to me.

The standard Wyatt's mag box with bdl bottom metal should give you plenty of room. You're looking at around 3.7" with the 195's, and 3.61 with 180's in a 28 Nosler. You can get close to 3.7 with factory 700 stuff.

Thank you for the information! I kept hearing about problems fitting that round and when I looked up the max length that would fit in the Accuracy International magazines I was looking at the heavy bullets wouldn't fit. Pmags wouldn't fit anything with that parent case either. I will look into the Wyatt's magazines

I would do the 3.85 center feed wyatt box. Never hurts to have a little extra room.
A reamer with about .325 freebore for the 195 will put you over 3.7 if you wanna get close to the lands.

I have a 28 Nosler built on a Surgeon long action. I use APA CIP length bottom metal and AICS 338 CIP magazines. The action required some minor machining by my gunsmith to fit the CIP length magazines. This setup allows for COAL up to 3.76, which is plenty for this cartridge. 28 Nosler feeds like a dream out of the AICS magazines as well.

I agree the 338 mags work real well!

I have an XLR Evolution chasis for my Sako trg-s in 28 Nosler. It takes AICS style magazines and I use an accurate mag 338 lapua which lets me run a 195 berger as long as I like.
Hopefully this is of some help.

There are lots of options, I have used the AI 3.85 mags and the Wyatt Bdl box mags and both are great for 26/28 Nosler and 300/338RUM and 338 Lapua

Thanks everyone! Sounds like sticking with a 338 Lap will do the trick. So now that brings up the thought of using a 338 Lap action for the build also? In addition to the magazine issues I have also heard a lot about cutting/machining the bottom of a long action to open it up. I'm really starting to think it would be best to just start with a quality 338 lap action as the base for a build?

Not sure what you mean by a Lapua action. When I think of a Lapua-specific action I think Surgeon XL or BAT model M. Neither of those is required for a 28 Nosler. I would get a quality long action like a Surgeon 1086 or Defiance Deviant. Your gunsmith may need to open it up slightly to fit CIP magazines, but that isn't a big deal at all. You can order a Defiance long action factory cut for CIP magazines as well. Bottom line is any good long action will work. You definitely don't need a beefy Lapua action for a 28.

When Surgeon was making actions in Oklahoma, they made a 1086 specifically for a 28 Nosler. They called it a 1086 WSM. They also had bottom metal for the 1086 WSM that was cut for the CIP magazines.

To word it differently. So the COAL of a 28 Nosler with 195 Bergers surpasses the standard 28 Nosler specs and is in the neighborhood of a 338 Lap COAL. From what I understand this causes problems with both magazines and actions. Chambering also for that matter requiring a longer throat cut. Rather than remachining a long action to allow the extra COAL to feed and function reliably, would it not be better to start with an XL action intended for a 338 Lap to accommodate a similar COAL? I have no doubt that the LA will handle the pressure. The question of using an XL action is based solely on the COAL.

I built my 28 Nosler from a Rem 700 that was chambered for 30-06. I use the 300 RUM AI mags and I have zero issues chambering anything up to 3.7 COAL. My mags will allow a touch longer (3.76) but I haven't tried it. On a positive note, if you use the ELDX line of bullets, they like a pretty good jump off the lands, so mag length is not as critical.
