7mm PRC

@ 3.9" Long OAL the 7mm PRC would be a Monster and way too long. The 7-KAM is perfect IMO and if you think it's under-bore Then you need the 7-300 Blaser (7-SMX).

Development of the PRCs doesn't take anything away from those other cartridges. If you want one of those other 7mm today I say go for it and enjoy.

ADG has 6.5 PRC brass out now and can't seem to make it fast enough. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they are working on 300 PRC. I know Alpha is thinking about it when the current projects are completed. The ink is hardly dry from the 300 PRC introduction. Give it a minute. I'd sure like to have a healthy positive discussion about the possibility of a new chambering.

I think ideal would be set back a little from 300 PRC. I'm not familiar with the 7-KAM so I'll have to look it up. IMO capacity ~85gr H2O (similar to 7mm Blaser, 7mm Practical, 7 LRM) is what I'd like to see. More than that look at the 28 Nosler them 7mm RUM. In an optimal sized modern design 7mm the Blaser and LRM are what's there and each have their issues.

I've never used much Hornady brass before, but how does their new stuff hold up? Specifically, how does the PRC last and perform? Thanks

I haven't used any of the PRC head stamped brass, but I've been very hard on the 375 Ruger brass and it's done great. I'm still working through my original batch of 200 cases I picked up more than 10 years ago in the 375 Ruger and the primer pockets are all still tight. This is after a lot of very stout loads. Same goes for the cases I've used for the 338/375 Ruger. I've pushed those to levels I'm not proud of and still got 3 firings before the primer pockets were trashed. Held to more reasonable (but still hot) levels the cases last 5-6 firings. By all accounts, the PRC brass is proving to be better than the 375 Ruger brass. I know Rich Sherman has been happy with the new brass so far in his 30 Sherman Mag.

That's smack dab in the middle of "7-KAM" dimensions. Only it's longer, might as well just neck down the 300-PRC Brass, it would be way easier. These Case capacities are already available in more popular Cartridges starting from the 7-300 Win Mag, and working our way down to 7x61 with all the short mags in between. It's only when we get down to the "7-6.5 PRC" (7mm-07) we regain our Sanity. "7-300 RCM-MX" / Then we are back to 7-SAUM vs 7-WSM in the short Action.

("Kamikazi" whacks brass off at Base of Neck using: 300 PRC or 6.5X68s or 8x68 Brass. Philosophy is not have a large build up of brass from moving Base of Neck Down. Now pondering the same in 300-RUM brass called "SMX") Just Whack It Off!! Suddenly the 300 Blaser and 7mm Blaser Dimensions pop up as the 300 is Whacked off at the base of the Neck and the 7 is Whacked off at the Shoulder.

jpndave,
"7-KAM" is short for KAMIKAZI!!! My best Design yet. 300-SMX is essentially an Improved 300-Blaser or 30-338 Nosler. So which is it? Too expensive? Too Overbore? Too Rare? Not Pretty enough? Go on.. Where does it end?

Well I would hope you think it is perfect if you designed it! Sounds like a cool cartridge. Just because we're talking about something different, doesn't take away from your design any more than the other 7mm designs discussed. BTW, where are you getting .300 Blaser brass? I thought only the 7mm and .338 were imported to the US.

I could certainly critique the design but much of that would be my opinion and others needs or wants are certainly different. The fact we're on a thread to discuss 7mm PRC options shows others are interested in the same.

As to the 7mm PRC being Monster long, don't know where the 3.9" dimension comes from, the 300 PRC is specified at 3.700" max OAL and the 7mm certainly doesn't need to be longer, if the shoulder gets set back another 1/8" plus, that would give even more room.

How do you reload something that has the worst brass in the industry ? Or is this discussion all of factory ammo? 28 Nosler - ADG brass, 7-300 NM Lapua and Peterson brass, 7-300 win- unlimited brass, the list goes on. What are the true long range custom reloaders going to do? Wait 2 years for a comparable brass company to hopefully start making it? Velocity is not almost any different than a 7-300 win? Sweet spot on 195's is 28 Nos on the button at 3050-3080 right ?

If you necked the .300 PRC straight down to 7mm, without changing the shoulder or neck length, it would work perfect with a 3.7" magazine box. The 180 ELD is 1.54" long, subtract the boattail (0.190) and subtract the neck length (.308) that leaves around 1.042" of bullet sticking out of the case:The .300 PRC is 2.580" long, so add those two together, and you get 3.622" with the boattail/bearing surface junction seated right at the neck/shoulder junction.

If the 180 ELD touched the rifling at say 3.632" that would give the chamber roughly a 0.242" long throat. Using that same freebore with a Berger 195 in the 7mm-300 PRC, would give a C.O.A.L. of around 3.696" touching the lands and with the bearing surface above the neck/shoulder junction. Seat the Berger 0.020" off and it's at 3.676", the bearing surface is still above the neck/shoulder junction, you have full use of the case capacity, and it will reliably feed in a 3.7" mag box.

If someone other than Hornady starts making 300 PRC brass won't that also fix the only problem with the LRM?
