I've finally shot the barrel out of my 300wby and am planning on changing it to a different cal. I am leaning toward 6.5x300 since the smithing will be minimum. Question is what kind of life will I get out of the new barrel. I'm not going to try to max out for speed, I'll probably stick close to my proven H1000 loads.

You will probably get 800-1000 rounds of useful accuracy out of a 6.5/300 if treated properly say a barrel cut crowned and chambered is $650...and say you get 1,000 shots...say a box of ammo reloaded is $35--that is about $1750 dollars worth of shooting..so I'd be more worried about the cost of shooting--shooting it out will cost you 3 times as much as a new barrel...

For me I look at how many hunting trips that would cost me....a lot more than a barrel and shooting it out.

Cave, perhaps consider a non-Wby caliber in the belted mag. Usually much less barrel deterioration. Good luck

I built a 6.5 STW which is the same as 6.5 300 Weatherby. I built it on a 300 Wby. MK V with a 30" Lilja 1/8 twist 140 gr with 82grs. H870 @ 3550 fps. I don't think I will live long enough to burn it out, at age 83 HaHa. If you want t reach out for a LONG LONG shot it will do it. Have fun. The WOP

Jesus man, can't you read the question???

Here's the question from the original post : "Question is what kind of life will I get out of the new barrel." I think this guy dealt with that rather handily, stating that he should expect to get somewhat less barrel life than he got with his 300 Weatherby. Did I miss something here ???

He's asking about 6.5x300, not your calibre suggestion

By going 6.5/300 you are limiting yourself to a very small selection of light 150 gr. and lower bullets. If that's what you want then just load lighter bullets in a new .300 barrel and still have the option to shoot heavies when needed. My 300 Mark V accumark is getting close and I'm just going to put a better barrel on it. Weatherby has teamed up with Kreiger and my barrel is ordered. I also bought two new 6.5 rifles this year....TO SHOOT 6.5.....just me my friend!
