300wsm vs 7mag

I'm building a Tikka 300wsm or 300 Sherman max with the new hells canyon magazine designed to run wsm/saum cases with 3.38" max length. It's going to have mike's 23" alpine 9.5tw barrel, Mesa altitude stock, should be 6-6.2#. Will run 225 freebore for shooting 215 Bergers @ 2850-2900 hopefully. Keep in mind a 7 mag pushing a 180 hybrid @ 2900+ will do very similar things ballisticly.

What is the hells canyon magazine? I've been trying to collect all the info I can for a 270 wsm/270 ss build and it's been tough trying to figure out how to run a 270. Wsm with 170 eol in a long or what mag to best benefit the ss in a short

I know what you mean. My magazine can accomodate 3.003" with maybe .010" clearance but to cycle correctly and the best COAL/CBTO compromise, I ended up with ...

COAL = 2.975"
CBTO = 2.197"
.080" off the lands.
What rifle are you using? What's your muzzle velocity with the 215 gr load? TIA.

New mag he developed for tikkas. Uses factory dbm and runs short mags with long bullets. Fills a huge hole in the tikka lineup.

This is a little bit of an academic conversation. There are some subtle differences. For most circumstances, no animal will know the difference.
7 mag has a slightly better overall bc and the 300 has a wider selection of bullets.
I'm a 30/33 cal camp person, but wouldn't be offended if someone gave me or used 7 mag. I still prefer the 300 wm over the wsm for heavy bullets.

I'd recommend you keep your Tikka 7RM and have a new barrel put on that can shoot the heavy 7s, something with a 8 twist. With that twist you can even shoot the 195s, from other posts those can be pushed 2800 from a 7RM. I made the mistake of turning my 7RM into a 338WM a few years ago. The 338 is a good round, and it put my elk down well. However, I think the 7 would have probably done as well and been better for deer. I've had to do more switching to find good deer bullets for the 338 than I did with the 7. I have a long action with a burned out barrel (MCM edge stock, Lawton action, jewell trigger, Badger DBM), that is waiting for some extra funds so I can buy a Proof 8 twist 7mm barrel so it can become a lighter weight 7RM.

I am torn between to rifles/calibers. Shooting factory ammo
I have the opportunity to sell my current rifle and buy something new for elk. With shot opportunity ranges out to 800-900 yards.

My current rifle Tikka t3 superlight 7mag with 1:9.25 twist. shooting 162gr eldx
(I shoot 154gr sst currently with great success on many deer and bear out to 700 yards)
Or
Kimber 8400 300wsm with a 1:10 twist shooting 200gr eldx

With those two options at hand. Would I be better off with the 300wsm or stick with the 7mag.
Thank you

I would stick with what you're shooting now, unless there's a problem with it. It sounds like there isn't. You've already found a couple of good loads, and it you want more bullet weight, there are heavier bullets out there without going to a larger bullet diameter and a different cartridge. You seem to like the Hornady bullets, and they make a 175-grain ELD-X. My guess is that you could move that one fast enough to please yourself with a 7mm magnum. I don't know how the BC compares with a 200-grain .308, but the trajectory & wind drift would probably be very similar. A little research into that might save you a lot of fussing around.

Why use such a heavy bullet for the .300 WSM? I reload for the .300 WSM and I only use 180 grains bullets.

The better question is why not. I am a big fan of heavy bullets for my intended purpose and tend to capitalize its benefits on just about any chamberings I have, i.e., .175 on my .270 AI, 215s on my .300 WSM/.300 WM, 225/230 on my .30 LARA, etc. I will be loading my .264 WM with the 156 soon too. Run the numbers between 180 and the 215 you'll see what I mean. Where I hunt, antelope, deer, bear, and elk roams and shots can easily range from 200 yards to 1K yards. The bottom-line, it boils down to personal preference and intended purpose. If you are happy with your current load, no need to change just because others are doing it. Cheers!

Twist rate & magazine length in a tikka limit you with a full size magnum cartridge & heavy for caliber bullets to reach their full benefit. If your gonna rebarrel & want to stay with a .284 then one of the short mag cartridges & a 180 seated out long with the HCA magazine is a perfect marriage.

I left my superlite 7mag with the factory barrel shooting 168's,added a Mesa cf stock & new bolt handle & im sure it will be more than adequate to take anything I hunt. The 300wsm/215 Berger Tikka build is a want to build a semi custom 30 shooting heavies.

As said above, I'm sure animals won't be able to tell the difference with any of the combo's mentioned in this thread
