What distance is considered long range?

I suppose "long range" means different things to different people, but I was wondering, in general, what is considered long range? Is it any shot over 200 yards? is it 500 yards? Is it 800 yards? What's is considered "long range" to most hunters in real world hunting situations?

Lots of opinions here, but I'd say anything outside of an 'optimized' (not maximized) point blank range for any given cartridge dips your toes into 'long' range. I say this in a hunting context because outside of an optimized PBR you need to start considering elevation corrections and shortly thereafter wind corrections. Anything inside an optimized point plank range typically doesn't need to consider much in terms of ballistics. Longer is of course longer.

Yep. This is not an easy question to answer. There are too many factors to consider such as; equipment, shooter ability, environmental conditions and etc...could be anywhere from 400 yards to way beyond.

I would consider it dependent on the weapon and target. Probably any combination where miss judged wind or range would cause a miss of a vital area. Might be greater than 70 yards on a rabbit with a .22, 200 yards on a deer with a .308, etc.

Here in southern Arizona in the terrain we hunt, normally 15 to 20 mph winds on a daily basis and with wind gusts of up to 35 mph in late mornings and afternoons, so qe jave to read the wind right.

For me 500 yards is long range, thats my max right now, but I want to better my skills so I can shoot further.

For me 500 and up. Over 1200 is elr. But that's just to me.

HUNTING long range, for me, would be 400+. Even though we have shot game animals a lot further than that under the right conditions.
SHOOTING long range, 800+.
COYOTE HUNTING long range....as long as I can see em's, I am flinging lead at em'. 1365 so far is as long as I have shot them....so far.

1365?! That had to be a rush!! And taking a coyote instead of a milk jug(nothing against milk jug snipers) makes it even better.

(1) Longrange hunting and shooting:<1,000 yards

(2) Extreme longrange hunting and shooting: starts at 1,000 yards
