I always pack a hand gun mostly my .357 when hunting, .40 cal glock 22 concealed and hunting sometimes and my 9mm when I backpack or traveling.
How many carry a 44 or similar when you are rifle hunting?

I think a good dog would be better than a pistol? People are easy to sneak up on
Dogs are a whole lot more alert to the wind and things. It wouldn't even have to be a big dog a Jack Russel would be fine.

Problem with a dog is, when they get chased were do they run back to. The Owner.

But they BARK a lot so if I know they are coming..Look out bear!

While it is usually true that something is better than nothing be especially careful of those Concealed Carry Calibers, they may make a already mad animal even madder !! I have carried a .44 Mag for many years and had a couple close calls though nothing ever came of it. I have been very lucky !! I like the .44 Mag because the loud muzzle blast is usually enough to scare most animals away then I still have the lethal force if really needed.
If Elmer Keith were alive he would vote for the 44 Magnum though I prefer the 45 LC. I am old and prefer vintage calibers that will do the job. The 45 LC can be loaded hotter than the 44 Magnum.

Maybe...but the truth is its a numbers game in a critical defense situation. How many of those 44mag rounds can you put on target in a couple seconds? Maybe one? How many with a glock 20 or an XDM? It would be significantly more.

I know what yo mean, I'm 75 and I usually carry a S&W model 69, 5 shot .44 mag or a Ruger Vaquero in .45 long colt. I have to admit that the Ruger is more comfortable to shoot and both make enough noise to scare most animals away so I don't have to shoot them though the single action Ruger is much slower reloading.
Yes, spray the jungle works for squad tactics but take the first 1/2 second and put the front sight on target for the first shot. It is like the charging cape buffalo: better put the first one in the CNS or he will die after you do.

I don't disagree, but Maybe easier said than done isn't it? If you think you are going to pull out your handgun and make a perfect first shot on a charging animal at 10 - 20 yards you are kidding yourself.
I am saying I can put 10 10mm bullets in a small circle faster than I can put 2 44mag bullets. I have tried this several times. I tried the big wheel gun and found i wasn't as proficient with it. Loved the idea of it, but it didn't work as well as a glock 10mm for me.
That's why I like my braked Glock .460. The recoil is snappy, but equivalent to my buddy's Glock 20 10mm. Shooting Underwood 255 hard cast @ 1340 and 230 hollow points @ 1420 it basically turns it into a quick(ish) firing, higher capacity and accurate .44 Mag. Well, a mid level .44 mag (matches or exceeds most factory ammo). Plus I can shoot .45 ACP and .45 Super if I want, or just swap back to the OEM barrel and spring.
Last season's elk hunt I walked into a remote spot at the bottom of a valley that had a depression filled with elk and deer carcasses and large cat tracks (and very thick vegetation going up the side of the mountain). I had my .338 RUM and found myself wanting something quicker and more maneuverable...left the Glock at camp.
