Understanding the 308 win

Holycity73 said it best.
I began to really appreciate the 308 back in 2005 when FT Benning game management put a $40 bounty on wild hogs. I sat on a Bradley qualification range and made enough money to pay for most of the rifles I own today. This is a very capable round and I don't think anyone will dispute how effective well placed 30 cal bullets can be.

Hi, I had Browning Lever Carbine in .308 for deep woods deer, in Maine and NY state. It was a pleasure to carry ,so light , and the first shot was always great. Pencil Barrel .

I now have a Savage 110 Heavy Barrel H-S Model in.308 for Target use only . I use 41.0 Grns. of 3031 with a Horn 110 Grn. V Max or a Berger 115 Grn FB Target bullet. It shoots very well and has very light recoil. Getting ready for SCORE SHOOTING at the local bench rest match

First, that's the right attitude to have towards a cartridge. Most folks go into a cartridge expecting this or that, or something they once read on the internet. Second, barrel life will be nearly infinite. Third, you will enjoy the .308 Win, as long as you have a good barrel in that rifle.

It gets underestimated these days with all the CreedWhore craze, but it's still the original LR target badass.

Get a box of Lapua brass. Get a box of Berger 180 Elite Hunter bullets. Get some Varget powder, and Federal 210M or CCI BR2 primers. Start around 40gr of powder and work up your load to pressure. Nearing the top-end of the pressure spectrum, you should find a very accurate load. This will be a good starting point.

Please use a different word than WHORE next time

Thanks

Amazing round. My truck gun is a push-feed M-70 with a custom 1 in 8" barrel @ 18-1/2". I was able to load the old Barnes 110-grain "X" to 3200 fps with H335. Absolutely amazing killer on deer. Wish I could have tried it on pigs, but only have 13 rounds left.

I love the versatility of the .308. In hunting loads I've got a 130 TTSX barnes with an easy shooting 45.1 gr of Varget that is carrying 1000 ft/lbs out to about 425 yds. Same gun likes a 180 SST with again a really easy shooting charge of 38.1 gr of Varget that will be at around 1000 ft/lbs at about 525 yrds. Both of those have a lot a speed left if you need to crank them up. It really is a fun round for reloading with lots of options and lots of applications.

A 168 eldm from a 308 is a top notch deer slaying combo!
For long range stuff, I use a 195tmk in my 11.25 twist barrel and shoot it out to 1450yds
Depends how you want to use it but with a 10 twist and 200.20x bullet it'll be pretty fun at the range.
I've used 200eldx with wicked groupings.
41gr varget on the heavys
44gr varget on 168 and 155 is what I've found in my rifle

Here's another perspective on the .308... up to about 160gn bullet weight, it can easily match or exceed the velocity of a 30-06. Of course, it won't handle the heavier bullets as well but can still be dialed in for an excellent accuracy round with the mid heavies.

I bought some Barnes tsx-bt 130gr.Haven't tried them yet.Have you killed deer with the ttsx you shoot?Or anything..308

OK, so I got this 2011/2012ish Savage FCP-SR from the bygone "Indian Head" logo days (horrors!) w/ digital camo and 24" bbl. The thing is so boringly accurate I like to say that it shoots itself. My load for it is painfully boring too; 168 SMK on top of 42.0 grains of IMR 4895. Brass? Whatever, PMC, Winchester, or whatever the weekend warriors leave at the range. 1/2 MOA @ 300 all day long. The rifle is in "dry-dock" right now, looking for a piece of glass cause I pilfered it for one of my 6.5s.

Anyway, I keep thinking I should get with the times and actually give it some love with a better powder/bullet combination. A hybrid paper puncher/ hunting pill would be nice.
