Been watching a lot of videos, and really getting an itch to "build" one. I was going to try to find a Remington 700 ADL to butcher for the action.

I looked at Krieger barrels, and this is where I start asking questions. Is their #9 contour "Heavy Target", heavy enough?

I would like to build it as a .300 RUM, and get the barrel 26" , in a 1 in 8", with the 250 grain A-Tip in mind. The 300 PRC pushes the 250 at 2700 according to Hornady. So would it be safe to say, the RUM will be in the 2850 range? With that velocity, it will stay supersonic out to 2200 yards, and hit the 2 mile mark right at 900 fps. Taking 7.8 seconds to get there.

With a 300 yard zero, its 131" low at 1k.

Stock, would probably just find something laminated, and bed the action. Would build it as a single shot.

Anyway, basically spitballing, but I have a cousin with an ADL. Now to call him.

Suggestions?

I would consider the 30 Sherman Magnum (Modified 300 PRC) You can shoot factory PRC ammo very accurately to fire form your brass and then load with the 30 SM dies. We are getting Norma or Nosler performance with a .530 case head and no rebated rim. I shoot the 230 Berger easily at 3050' with a 28" barrel which I would recommend whether you build a rum or A 30 SM. You should be able to run the 250 at near 2900'.

I'm getting the 225 Hornady hpbt to 3000 fps from a pair of 10" twist 26" 300 rum rifles with either rl33 or rl50. I have headroom too with rl50; it's more of a case capacity issue than pressuring out. I wouldn't doubt better than 2800 from a 250 in either rifle, but I've got around 1,000 pills between the nosler 220 and the Hornady 225 so I'm not really looking at other stuff.

I'd build a 300 norma, with a 26" barrel, it'll run right with the rum, and not be limited in overall length. The 230 Bergers loaded properly in the neck is around 3.65". A 300 rum is over 4" in that scenario. Before people start saying can't build a norma on a rem700, yes you can.....Remington builds the 700 police in 338lapua.

What do you want the heavy profile barrel for? Meaning, how do you intend to use it? Long strings of fire with short shot intervals? Long strings with long intervals? 1 shot at an elk? The answer to that will probably be a good hint to your overall question. Just saying "target" doesn't give enough information. What kind of target shooting?

Something to take a road trip and shoot 500+ with. Ring steel, etc.

Re-read what I asked. You're still under-specific. Are you just going to shoot 1 time, ring the gong and go home or ?
I'd like to spend the evening shooting since I have to make a road trip to do it. So yeah, I'd like to be able to spend more time shooting, insteads of cool the barrel.

The .300 Norma Mag or one of the many 'improved' versions is a truly capable cartridge for the heavier for caliber bullets. Ryan Piece has been working with several rifles chambered for the standard and improved cartridge:

The thread has lots of details regarding factory ammunition as well as custom handloads. The rifles do not have to be extraordinarily heavy or even 'tactical' in nature unless that's what you prefer. Properly designed standard-type hunting rifles work quite well for this cartridge. The 250 grain A-Tip will fit right in but you also have excellent choices from the Berger line of bullets also. :)

I have 3 different versions started now and will have them finished in the next couple of weeks, I hope. Work keeps getting in the way...;)

@sable tireur Ryan built my 300nmi, still breaking in the barrel, but it shows excellent potential with factory Berger ammo. The rifle is the best of a lot of worlds. Mines wearing a new NF NX8 4-32X50, weighs 10.2# with scope and an adj cheek. Light enough to pack, but heavy enough to shoot accurately a long way out. He builds a top notch rifle!
