300 ultra mag reloading info

If you want to go the heavy low drag route and stretch it out, I never got those to shoot well at mag length. Wyatt's box is a pretty easy job if you fancy yourself a home gunsmith. Pick your bullet and find the goal the rifle likes before cutting anything though. Try Retumbo. Best powder I've found for my rum.
The Berger 230 grain OTM seems to make the jump from mag length very well, I had it work in two RUMs at a little over 3.6" just below 3,000fps with Retumbo.

I am running RL 22, 91.2, with a Barnes TTSX 168's and they are averaging 3420 at 5000 ft elevation. I haven't had an elk walk away from this combo yet.
I shot my desert bighorn ram with a 168 Barnes XBT in 2003 at 306 yds.. I snuck up on him and 5 other rams. I peeked over hill and was face to face with one of other rams at about 10 yds.. They took off lined out with my ram at the end. They went down and up a hill and mine stopped in front of drainage . Friend said 306 yds.. boom. He endoed and slid down a drainage and under a bush. We were freaking out cause we couldn't find him. We didn't know the drainage was there and that's why he hesitated . Took awhile to find him but we ended up happy hunters :)
I have used a lot of Barnes X, XBT, TSX and TTSX. the last 2 have shot good out of all guns and calibers and good results on bighorn, elk, deer and antelope. I hoping Hammers are even better. I don't see why not so far !

I looked up load velocities for 181 Hammer. By the way all mine averaged 182.5 grains, which I liked !
All out of 26 in. Barrel.
94.0 grs. Retumbo ave. 3173 fps.
94.5 grs. Retumbo ave. 3182 fps.
95.0 grs. Retumbo ave. 3202 fps.
94.0 grs. H1000 ave. 3243 fps.
97.0 grs. RL33 ave. 3203 fps.
97.0 grs. IMR 8133 ave. 3222 fps.
No pressure signs in any of these.
Have up to 100.0 grs. to try with RL33.
Up to 96.0 grs. To try with H1000.
Up to 100.0 grs. To try With N570.
Haven't loaded RL26 yet. Just got the magic powder.
Just a load I've used for long time ,
98.0 grs. Retumbo w/185 Berger VLD.
Ave. 3331 fps..
97.0 grs. Retumbo 190 VLD. ave. 3254 fps.

With the 200gr ELDX I've used Nosler brass, Fed 215, and Retumbo. Starting at 90.0gr for 3030fps, up to 95.0gr for 3240fps. For my setup the most accurate is 92.5gr for 3140fps.
26" bbl.
Thanks for that data. Getting ready to try Retumbo with 200 and 212 ELDX.
Also now RL26 and N570.
100.0 grs. RL33 w/200 ELDX shot good out of my rifle. 26.0 in. Barrel. Ave. 3151 fps. Was Rem. brass. Fed. 215 match.

In my custom Rem 700 I run 91.0gr Retumbo with a Berger hunting VLD 210gr. Groups @ 500 are inch or better....plus, with custom turret on Zeiss Conquest scope, I dial between 200-600 and in between and all hits are where you aim. Muzzle velocity is 3050fps...if it helps...rsbhunter
Same load worked great in my rifle but fps. was low. Ave. 2968. SD 6 ES 13.

Retumbo seems to be a powder that works in 90% of 300 RUM's....the reason I use Bergers is because of the accuracy...at long range, 500-1000 yds , I want to be sure it goes where I point it. Bergers have a good reputation on animal kills ...rsbhunter

That's always a pucker affect right!! Glad you nailed him and found him. I don't have much info on Hammers. I need to check into it. I found something that works good for me, but I'm always up for a change. Thanks for sharing your story!

I bought a lot of factory ammo when it started to fall out of favor and some one was trying to dump it and it's not a prairie dog so I still have some left. I haven't reloaded it for years. I was on an elk hunt in January and I helped field dress a cow shot with a Barnes .300 RUM 180gr. TSX. I was impressed with the wound channel. I looked it up and found some at really good prices. I didn't buy any, but at that price, I if I needed some, I would have gotten it. If you shop around, you can find ammo for not much more than reloading. I'm a die hard reloader, but if I can find quality ammo that cheap, I'll try it. Oh by the way, my last reloads were with AA 8700. Good luck finding some.
