300 prc velocity

Mine shot the factory 225 ELD'm @2876. 26" 1-9.4 PR barrel.
That's pretty dang good!
Wasn't the advertised velocity around 2810, from a 24" barrel..
I can't understand why the hell they'd use such a short barrel for testing

Not sure off the top of my head. I would assume it will speed up some after some more shooting. Probably be in the low 2900 range.

That's not bad and I'm not surprised. My version runs the 225 at 3050' with a 28" barrel.

Just to clarify that's not the factory load correct?

I checked the velocity on mine when I only had 12 shots on it. I expect it will speed up a little more after getting more shots down the barrel. Probably put it in the low 2900 fps range.

If your barrel was 26" it would be closer to 3000 FPS with the improved version. If that's the case it seems like the factory loads are close to max velocity. A guy might get a little more out of it but maybe not much by reloading.

I bought one box of factory originally and it shot ok. After doing PR's suggested break in, getting a zero, and velocity, I backed up to 852 yards and shot a 6" group. It shot decent enough I grabbed 9 more boxes. I'll probably end up loading for it. But for now I'll just shoot factory until I have 100-200 brass. If it keeps shooting factory ammo decent I might not load for it. We will see.

No, mine was a hand load. I've run it up to 3100' but too hard on brass!

I assume your load is with Hornady brass, will you share what powder and primer is getting you those numbers? How much jump to the lands do you have? Thanks!

Hornady brass.
F215 primer
83 N570. 3052'
.025" jump
.040" jump also worked
**** This is in my 30 SM which is the improved 300 PRC***
You should probably start with 78-79 grains. You might max by 80-81??

Elkaholic,

Thanks for the load data. I thought I had replied to you earlier, but don't see it. Can you explain 30 SM / Improved 300 PRC?

It has a reduction in taper, 40° shoulder that nets about a 3gr capacity increase, I could be wrong a capacity gain. It's optimized to fireform factory ammo into new spec like the old ackley cases. The case becomes a bit more efficient, less trimming, and will get you maybe 100fps more max vs top loads in standard prc, but the brass will live longer due to more chamber wall grip and less bolt thrust. I'd think a Christensen ridgeline 300prc with the shoulder set back 2 threads and reaming with the Sherman design would be a great all around hunting rifle. A standard 300prc will do it all the same, albeit 100fps slower.

Thanks for that. It pretty much sums it up.

Have a 30" Bartlien with factory 225 it runs 2960. This was an average of the security me 5 rounds thru it. It will probably speed up just a little
