they cost more but hornady super performance ammo provides best velocity and the 162 gr will def penetrate deep enough on elk.no other factory ammo beats or matches it.the best handloads are only 3100 fps..plenty flat enough shooting .i have owned 7mmrem mag for over 50 years in various rifles.you wont be disa

just because a box of bullets has gold plated packaging .. doesnt mean its better .. a cheap old box of rem coreloc or blue box of federals might just be exactly what his gun loves .. but then again it might like the box with the neon lighting and some superheros picture on it .. id recommend trying at least 4 different factory boxes staring with the cheapest first .. all on the same day if you can

Dusty Noggin is correct. I'll add in the phrase of "Shot placement is everything."
Each rifle is going to shoot something better than the other. For my 7mm Rem Mag, it likes Hornady 162grn ELD-x bullets over Nosler Trophy Grade 160 gun Accubonds. I'd rather have the Nosler brass but my gun shoots just over 1/2'' with the factory Hornady's and under an 1'' with the Noslers. Good luck with it.

If he isn't reloading I would recommend Hornady Precision Hunter ammo. I really like their ELDx bullet line and shoot them (handloads) in both 6.5 PRC and 6.5 Creedmoor.
My factory Rem. 700's have all liked the heavier rounds, 175 gr., is what I use. But, as was mentioned, buy as many different rounds that is comfortable to the wallet and go shoot some groups. Your rifle will tell you what it wants you to shoot.
Thanks for all the input, its really appreciated. I think starting with the less expensive stuff first makes sense, that way if it doest shoot well theres not as much money tied up in those rounds. Seems like the 160 grain range is a good place to start too.

Ive killed moose with the 160 accubond in my 7mm rem magf and moose and elk with my 7mm stw in 175 grain ! None of the animals went more than 5-10 yards !

being a reloader for 57 years means little if i have not learned about rifles and hunting yes i learned long ago that rifles like some rounds and not others.i only recommeded he try hornadys first is because i figure they are best for his use out to 400 or 500 yds and they are higher velocity than any other. if his gun shoots them welli have great respect for the rem mag in fact ive burned out the bbls of more than one.i suggested asny long range bullet of 160 grain would do well.my input thats all

I have killed elk with Federal Premium 160 gr Nosler partitions. Federal Premium 165gr (or are they 160 gr, I can't remember)Sierra Game Kings, and HSM 168 gr VLD Bergers. My least favorite is the Game kings. I haven't had an elk go more than 20 yards without dropping except with the game kings. For whatever reason the game kings just didn't seem to hit them the same.

You won't go wrong with Vortex ammo from Barnes. The lighter bullets will pass through the elk even if you hit shoulders. I have killed several elk with my 7mm and the 140's, but I loaded those. I use 145's now even for my wife's 7mm-08. You can't go wrong for sure
