looking to build one of the two for elr/ hunting with a proof barrel and carbon stock will see hunting often and play with elr I know both will do just fine but I'm interested in your guys thoughts and experiences with both also barrel live for both

If you do Norma go improved, if you want a mag bolt face look at Ryan Pierce's 30-28 nosler. You can expect a few hundred rounds of barrel life with a Norma over a nosler. Most likely less throat erosion over time in the Norma as well.

The 28 is hard on barrels, 600-800 rounds is what I'm hearing a lot.

I only have 200 rounds through my 300 NM so I can't speak to barrel life, I will say though I'm using a lot of powder for the velocity I'm getting.. it'll probably only go 1000 rounds.
215's are running 3060 with 89 grains H1000 (HBN coated), I was running 225's 2950 with 87 grains. 26" 8 twist barrel.

It's shooting extremely well with 215's, but for the amount of powder I'm using to get that velocity I'm not overly impressed.
I'd go 30 Nosler or 300 PRC, you'll be right on the heels of the NM with less powder.

"I'm looking at the 300 to get better barrel live not less."
My bad, I would for sure go with the 300 norma and spend the extra $2-300 more for the larger action, and extend my barrel life by 200 rounds.

I'm not so sure on the better barrel life with the 300 NM over the 30-28 Nosler.
NM around 90 grains of powder the improved version over 90. 30-28 gonna be in the mid 80's. I'm betting there gonna be real close to the same maybe 30-28 tad better with everything being somewhat equal.

If that's the case then your right thanks for your input

Ryan pierce comparing throat wear over the 28 and NM improved, so far his guess on his personal rifle is it will make it 1000-1200 easy. Throat erosion after a few hundred rounds is minimal compared to the 28. Hopefully some people will start going through some barrels soon with some feedback.

A 28 Nosler is definitely gonna have more throat wear per round than a 30-28 or Norma.

Real world was posted above, 1200 is probable with the 300 Norma, 1200 is not with the 28 nosler...
Thanks bud I appreciate your info and as far as a action goes I'm buy a new action so to get either one doesn't bother me but after two barrels of 300 Norma i would shoot out 3 28 Nosler barrels so that's why I'm not worried about a little more for the action to start

I found that H1000 is a little too fast for the Norma. Running 215s and 230s in an improved version, RL-33 and IMR 8133 give much better velocities. Have some N570 coming to test as well.

If you improve the Norma properly, then you can increase the capacity to 110+gr of H2O. The Norma becomes a different animal at that point.

Empty 300 Norma Mag Imp. case: 311.6gr
Filled (H2O) 300 Norma Mag Imp. case: 421.8gr
Total H2O capacity: 110.2gr
