Darin I owned the 300 RUM in a Browning A-Bolt Stalker, weighed just a tad under 7 pounds. That being said, it was brutal when it came to recoil, tack driver no doubt but unrelenting on the shoulder. I sold that weapon and built the TC Encore SS Frame out with the 300 WIN Mag, not too bad but accuracy is worse than a smooth bore slug gun, do a lot of research on the TC before you invest in building your project, pins, stocks etc.. are available to improve accuracy. It sits in the safe, occupies space now. I built a Sendero chambered in the 300 WIN Mag, absolutely love it. The TC, I'm going to sell it along with the .223 barrel that came with it. Good luck

I had same thing happen to me. 5 rounds of 180 gr. Factory in Rem. 700 300 RUM. Sent it to Magaport (many yrs. ago) to have a magnabrake installed. Kicks like a 308 now. Got a Lil Beast for it now. Kicks even less. I was used to a 7 mag. Before that . What a difference. Before and after.

I have and had many Encore frames and barrels. Totally agree with the folks who are saying "no" to a RUM barrel. I've never found an Encore barrel that I couldn't get to shoot sub moa with hand loads, even pro-hunters. I have a 7mag pro hunter barrel and with the 28" barrel it can be loaded with Retumbo & a Berger 180 that runs slightly over 3000fps that has a more gentle recoil than a factory Winchester 175 by at least 30%. (perceived recoil because of the slow burning powder) It shots at MOA or a little better and have enough energy to put a deer down out to 1000+ (not that I'd ever shoot one that far) The nice thing is that combo shoots "like a laser" with only about 2mill drop at 500 yards and bucks the wind with the high G1 BC (.771) on the berger hunting bullet. In my experience it is about the best all around higher than normal energy round that shoots good out past 500 yards.

Another fun Encore barrel to play with is the 28" 25-06, with hand loading it is easy to chase the 257 weatherby velocities. No where near the energy as the 7mag but out to 500 is will take a deer with no problem. Inside 300 yards it is often bang flop with reasonable recoil.

Good luck deciding. I really like hunting with an encore because it is just so simple to clean if it gets wet. Can walk with one in the chamber & the hammer down safely. We do this often in bear country with a 16.5" .308 barrel loaded with heavy bullets. Works great.

I have built three 300 RUMs. The first one was a Winchester Model 70 that was fairly light (thin barrel) without a muzzle break. I bought the rifle through Gun Broker and it came with a 20 round box of ammo. There were 15 left when I got the rifle.

I went to the range and shot the Model 70 rifle as soon as I got it. I shot only 3 rounds before I had to stop (too much recoil. It hurt like hell!). My son who thought he was a "tough guy" said "I am recoil insensitive, let me give it a shot.". He shot once and was done. I then shot it a few more times at a later date using my son's lacrosse shoulder pads. I was thinking of selling the rifle because I wasn't man enough for the recoil. I then had a muzzle break installed and all was good.

I've now built 3 300 RUMs. All have muzzle breaks and now I only shoot those rifles suppressed (protects my hearing). The 300 RUM round with a 230 Gr Berger Target bullet outperforms my 338 LMs with the most efficient bullets. The last rifle I built has a Proof Research barrel and Manners carbon graphite stock but still weights around 10 or 11 lbs because I have a suppressor and 3x27 X 56 Schmidt and Bender PM II scope.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't build that rifle without a muzzle break. I think that you won't have a problem with a light 300 RUM if you have a muzzle break (that was my first rifle). However, I would ask "why do you need a 300 RUM? My rifles are heavy compared to what I think you want to build. I don't have a problem with a little extra weight because I like to shoot out to 1,000 meters reliably (My longest kill shot was 875 yard cow elk). The rifle is heavy but, because of the way it is built, I know it will always shoot straight. I am going to a shoot next weekend in Price Utah where we will shoot 1 gallon milk jugs at 1 mile. I bet my 300 RUM will out perform the 2 338 LMs we are bringing. A question you may want to ask is; "Will you be able to reliably take game at greater than 600 yards with your TC Encore?" If not, a 308 might be just fine.

I built a couple 300s all so they were great rifles. then i built a 338 edge with a 30 in heavy stainless barrel with a brake the recoil is like a 243 but noise is reall bad if you are standing two feet to either side and behind of coarse.its like a grenade going off.

Great guns, have a custom built bullbery 16.5", on core stainless pistol with his break in 338wm. Wife booked a bison hunt for my birthday in Montana one year, had the best hunt. Shot a 850 lbs bison, just right for my freezer.used a 185 barnes ttsx at 2850 fps. Hit it behind the left ear, it went up in the air 6 ft, and hit the ground hard. Guides said they never seen any one do that before,lol. Love my 338 wm, shoots 160 ttsx at 3150 too.

This thread has me now thinking of a 300WM barrel from MGM: full bull profile with light flutes to add as much weight as I can, 27-28", 1:8, throated for longer bullets, laminate stock set to add more weight. I bet this setup has a decent chance to shoot pretty well LR with the frame mods I listed prior in this thread.

I have a .300 WSM and a .50 caliber muzzle loader barrel. Both give me all the recoil I can handle. I have ultra mags so I don't think I'm a wuse.

Like already said call Mike or Kurt Bellm as they're the experts. I have a 300 RUM that fits my Encore but never shot it due to the issues mentioned. It was made by Virgin Valley which now is MGM. I too am a fanatic of Encore and have most every caliber. I'm more fond of the New Hampshire barrels pre Smith & Wesson purchase.

After several ammo choices and contacting Thompson Center they told me that they considered the 2 inch as acceptable for a hunting rifle.
That statement alone caused me to hang that rifle up and sold it the next week.
To each his own and I felt the same way about having a shorter more compact hunting rifle for thick brush.... but I'm not interested is supporting a company that will produce a rifle barrel thinking a 2inch group is acceptable.

You would be really unhappy with what Remington told me was acceptable.

I fell in love with the encore 20 yrs before I ever got my own. Dads best friend had one that he always hunted with when I was growing up .
I finally got my own 3 yrs ago . So far I've got a muzzle loader barrel , 7 mm08 , 204 ruger , 308 and 35 Whelen. The muzzle loader shoots roughly 1 1/2 groups at 100 yards. The 7 mm08 shoots absolutely beautiful with 120 ballistic tips and the 204 likes 35 gr Berger's haven't got to shoot the other two yet .
Back to the op post now . I'd contacted bull berry about doing a 257 weatherby and they said absolutely not the frame is not designed for that pressure . Kinda broke my heart just a little. I'd have to agree with what most others are saying don't do a rum in one of them . Just get a good glass with some ice and do your rum that way

I don't think MGM will make a barrel over 27 in.. it's the longest I could get with the full bull 6.5 PRC I had them make. Lost an inch and a half of bore with the integral m/b. If I could do over again I wouldn't do a m/b. I wanted a 28 in. barrel . I have no idea why they wouldn't do any length. Probably something to do with their equipment . I wonder what length is the limit with Bullberry ?
