Custom Action Recommendation

I have a number of Stillers and Defiance actions, the stillers are agreat action at a great value. The Defiance actions are finished nicer, polished to a mirror like finish which looks great but does not help you on a hunt.

Stiller was the first to come out with a high end 700 clone and they make a lot of them.

Exactly! Very well said.

I went off a Savage model 12 target action and have had great results, it will outshoot my Stuteville Precision Stiller tac30 build.

You can get the Mausingfield in LH, SA, with Savage thread either large or small shank. Great action...

ARC only made a few large shank Mausigfields, all current production actions use the standard 1.055"-20.

Any info on the JJ Rock Co. short and long actions? The fit the OP bid but I do not know much about them. Was looking at them earlier.

I recently built a PRS rifle in 6.5x47L using the Bighorn TL3 with a Criterion barrel using the Savage style nut. Mounting the barrel took less then 10 minutes using go, no-go gauge. It functions/feeds perfectly and the performance of the set-up is comparable to my most accurate shouldered customs. With the volumes I shoot for in PRS it's nice to avoid the wait and inconvenience of having a gunsmith re-barrel. I'll soon be ordering a second Bighorn in LA for a LRH rile build I planning.

I am not a professional gunsmith, just personal work. I have used four standard shank Savage 110's for a number of calibers (22-250, 243, 270, 30-06, 300WM, 300RUM, and 338 EDGE) from light barrels to 30" bull barrels, changing bolt faces as needed to suit. I made two very strong wood blocks to use with rough paper in my bench vice to hold the barrels for changing, have not needed an action wrench. Based on that I have now used barrels nuts on two Remington 700 actions turned down (I have an old Craftsman Atlas 12x36" lathe) to use 1 1/16" x16 barrel nuts from PTG, all good just as with the Savages. I have a Ruger American (1" x 16) with a barrel nut as well, works perfectly. I am building a 416-300RUM just for fun for the Remington 700 LA. My experience with all good barrels (Shilin) but one (Ruger) leads me to believe that the quality of the barrel is the foundation of an accurate rifle, with a high quality reamer used for the chamber and correct headspace, the gun will shoot fine. Of course it is enhanced by a good fitting stock, fine trigger and good optics. The Ruger American is the simplest of actions but it is SOLID: a beautiful design that evidently allows manufacturing with only a lathe and milling machine, apparently no need of a broach: no long slots. My two cents on this sunny Sunday morning.

Im debating another build as well. Will be used mainly for a hunting rifle. Been tossing around a few calibers but as far as action goes I'm almost positive it will be a bighorn tl3. I like the idea of the mechanical extractor, and controlled round feed. I also love the floating replaceable bolt head for ease of caliber change. Seeing as I'm looking at a long action magnum caliber I probably won't need another bolt face as everything I'm debating between shares the same magnum bolt face.

If for some reason I don't go this route (money, time, availability) then most like will be a kelbly atlas tac. I just used one on my most recent build and it is a ton of action for the money!

If you want a TI action, I much prefer Lone Peak to Pierce. I am building my second LP Fuzion. And have shot a bunch of others.

If you want less expensive, Kelbly Atlas Tac are awesome actions. Very smooth and tight tolerances.

What is it about the long peak compared to the pierce that you prefer. I've heard great things about both company's. But hearing less and less about pierce in the past couple years.

My next build will be a Bat action! I have a Curtis..Lone Peak..Surgeon...Defiance Rebel
All of them work fine? But I like trying new things and Bat's look really nice.

If you are trying to save some $$, you will be better of with a Savage or Rem and a professionally chambered Krieger/Batlien/Broughton/ext. than a custom action and a pre fit.
