thru a series of trades i am now the proud owner of a savage 111 7mm rem mag KIT rifle.
( ammo/nikon 3-9x scope/sling/ammo carrier, 24" medium bbl plastic stock/accu trigger)

what should i do with it.
i mainly shoot targets as oppose to steel at long range. have access to shoot 1/2/300, 600/1000yards.
not much of a target rifle as is.
sell it and use the money for something else
use it as the base for a target rifle ?
caliber.cartridge change ?
really open to ideas

What kind of cartridge would you like to shoot,,, I'm a thick skin hunter and target shooter,,, so I scaled back to the mid size cases...

Good to start there,,,, then pick a rifle for those needs.

Just an idea

Good luck finding what works.

Cheese from Don

+1 on what Don said. Try shooting it as-is and see how she performs. I am currently building a .264 WM with 26" 1:7" X-caliber prefit barrel ($430 with muzzle threaded for 5/8-24") from a Savage 111F LA (originally 7MM RM). Load it with the new Hornady 153g A-tip and you got yourself a target ringer.

i like your basic idea. 300 win mag
i will kinda go cheap with this build
this will be a hunter class elite long range gun 2000 yd group and score.
boyds varmint stock/harris bipod
someones light trigger upgrade
maybe some ADG brass/ cutting edge 220 lazer
long oal,,,maybe 3.7" ( need a bullet to do a dummy)
lija/broughton/krieger bbl...i chamber my own
scope is going to be a price issue to stay cheap...something to ponder.
anyone need a new 7mm 1/9 savage bbl ?

Ditch the stock and get a B&C, Choate or one of the high end adjustables ($$). Sell the barrel on here and get a Pac Nor pre-fit in .300WinMag (26-30"), (1-8 or 9twist), Sendero contour and have at it.

i own a 300 wm match reamer, and will long throat that with my throater.
found a big heavy krieger 1/9 bbl
ordered a boyds varmint stock(long flat butt stock)
150 pc of unfired brass
have to pick a trigger ..basix's looks good ounces to 3 lbs
i have a quick mount for my 9" suppressor
scope is going to be an issue

I won a Savage 111 like you said . Took of the 3x9 Nikon and put a Burris Black Diamond 4x16x50 I had laying around. I'm a 4 or 6x24x50/52 guy though. I shot it today. It was fairly accurate. Very light and kicked like hell. Like JohnnyK said, if you are going to keep it , get a B&C stock. I put one on my Tikka before I ever shot it with the plastic stock. Love it. The stock on the 111 looks like fiberglass. Have HS Precision stocks on my Rem Mod 700 300 RUM and Ruger Mk II . They are great but pricey.

Unless you do some modification or single shoot it, you might ran into some challenges in your 3.7" OAL goal. Best I can with my Savage 111F in .300 WM is 3.53" with 200 NAB but can get 3.66" in my SAKO M995 with in .300 WM with 200 NAB.

Those are excellent barrel choices. I have 30" Lilja 1:8" 3G on my .270 AI and 27" Lilja 1:9" 3G on my .30 LARA and they are simply amazing.

Good luck and happy safe shooting.

That's where my LR build started.
Ended up with rifle basix trigger, Shilen 26" Stainless select match 7rm varmint taper, McMillan game scout stock. Vortex razor heavy mofo tops her off, now. Put about $1100 in it, without scope and she does shoot.
She was a pretty good shooter before all of that but not with that crappy kit scope.
