All my Long Range shooting has been with a Ruger Precision 308, and it is way to heavy to take to the mountains
Just got a Browning Xbolt Long Range Max in 300 WM,26" barrel, 1:8 twist Bought for a Colorado Bull Elk hunt. Range limited by me to 800 yds
I have a decent selection of 30 cal bullets and powders for testing and I can get others.
I also have a LabRadar for the range.
What process to you use to optimize bullet selection to give you max range and max impact energy? Any help would be appreciated

Use what you have that is 180 grain and larger to determine what is most accurate with your rifle. You could probably get away with 168, but I don't know how stable it would be with the 300.

I use a Berger 215 hybrid in my 300 WM. They always shoot great and have been very easy to load for and work great on game. For an elk hunt with an 800 yard max range it would be hard to be those being pushed by H1000 or Retumbo. You should not have an issue getting an 800 yard effect range for elk with that combo.

I'd do a quick seating depth test, following Berger's guideline, but using magazine length as the longest, find something grouping decent then perform a ladder test at 600yards in .3gr powder increments looking for your node. Once you find it you can judge for yourself the accuracy and if a further seating depth ladder should be performed.
Conversely if you already own multiple 30 cal bullets, load 3 of each at optimal length and start testing, I've never done that, but I'm sure one would jump out. I like the 212 eldx for 30 cal magnum bullet

Thanks guys for all the input. In the past I selected the bullet, and tried a powder someone recommended and loaded till we MADE it work. I'm trying to learn how to define the objective this time and build a load/bullet to achieve this. I'm trying to nerd this one out. Hehe

Remember everything is the next big thing..Till the next big thing comes along..
I'm watching the Monos they have made big gains in the last couple years.
And they are now about to pass the cup and core bullets..Watch and see!

I checked out the 215 hybrid All I see is a target bullet. Is this what y'all are talking about? I thought you shouldn't use these on animals? How fast are y'all pushing them?

Yes it is listed as a target bullet. The 215 is great on game. Load it up with Fed GM215M and H1000 at 30-40 thou off. I'm running them right at 3000 fps out of my 300 Win Mag. Do a search on here about the 215 Berger. Lots of info in Broz thread with good details and pictures.
