I have to admit, I do not have a lot of experience with Savage Axis Rifles. But I bought one on sale last year for my older daughter. She drew a tag this year, and I need to finish getting it set up for her. I have all the reloading supplies of course, and I just bought a scope for it. Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18×44. Not bad for $300 NIB. But I am getting ready to order rings and a 20MOA Picatinny rail for it. So here is my question...

Does Savage Axis have only one action length? I have a rail in my cart, but everytime I click on "Savage Axis XP Short Action", it puts a "compatable with Savage Axis XP Long Action" in the cart?

They are all long action, so yes all one action length.

The difference is in the stock. On the short action there is a spacer and you use a sa mag, on the long action there is not and you use a la mag. Actually makes them very versatile for budget rifle builds. I got my niece one for her birthday in 6.5 cm as she is really getting into long range. She is going to use it as is for a while, maybe put a better optic on it. Eventually we will get a good quality prefit barrel in whatever standard bolt face chambering she wants. So she can get a la stock, prefit barrel, and a la magazine and go from 6.5 creed to a .280 AI, for instance, no sweat, and for around $500 have a good shooting semi custom. Total invested would be $800 in the rifle, and she will get some good use put of it as it sits, and can later change it into a solid long range elk rifle.

What chambering did you get and where are you trying to order the rail from?

Egw can verify I put them on all the savahe axis I set up for friends. Great guns. You need to try the hammer 124 if your going for elk. My big audad made it maybe 15 yards. Broke shoulder on the far side and made a mess of the inside. Every powder charge I gave it from start to finish had sub.5" groups. The 147 eld shot good but was not impressed with them on Africa game like an scimitar oryx. It worked but Didn't get great penetration at 168 yards.

The Axis is all one action length. "Long" but is in between the the long and short Savage 110 action lengths. The recoil lug is in the stock and not screwed in with the barrel nut, as in a 110 action. On the bolt the second "locking lug" is half the size of the bolt head lug. The 110 has " same size" locking lugs. Barrels are probably the same...though there seems to be a slight difference in the " depth" or "height" of thread cut. Savage 110 threads might be cut "sharper"? Maybe older ones? Axis XP II may have accutrigger, mine does. Boyds has stocks...others? My axis 270 likes 130 grain bullets going 2900.

There is a reason for that. If long action, rotate so the short lug is on the right. If short then long lug is on right.

These are not locking lugs they are actually baffles. The reason for the different lengths is so that when you have a long action the bolt moves further to the rear.
