My 300ss (Sherman Short) Ruger M77

I finally got my 300ss up and running. I wanted to rebuild my old Ruger M77 (sentimental value). It was the first rifle I ever bought chambered in 7mm mag, and I killed 2 elk with it many many years ago. The Ruger internal box is tiny, like 3.4" which really limits what cartridges I could run. The 300ss was perfect!
My smith squared the entire action and bedded the original boat paddle stock, which I really wanted to keep.
It has a Bartlein barrel, 26" 10tw 3b contour.
Bare rifle weighs sub 7lbs. Launches Berger 215's at 2870fps. During testing I got close to 3000fps but best accuracy was sub 2900fps.
As you can see it's a TACK DRIVER!
1 hole groups at 100 yards.
Target looked like 1 minute of fly. Wish I could get to that point

Looks good! Next mod would be having your smith drill and tap the receiver so you can run a pic rail and normal rings. EGW makes a base for it, that requires drilling and tapping, but once done, you're good to go.

I've had M77 MKII's for over 20 years, and I've had plenty of issues with the proprietary rings. Plus, it really limits your options.

I'll second the EGW bases, I've tried that Wiegand base and just wasn't confident in it!
Had an EGW put on two rifles and running Warne rings!

Very nice results...both the gun, and the group!

When you said "old Ruger M77" I thought I'd see a tang safety and not the three position safety though. Either way, Ruger makes some very durable firearms.

Noticed the work done to the inside of the forearm. Would you elaborate on what was done in that area please ?

The boat paddle stock has a lot of flex near the forearm. Loading the bipod caused the stock to make contact with the barrel, even after inletting it a bit. My smith reinforced it with a super lightweight composite material used in aircraft. Added very little weight but made the stock very strong/stiff.

Great looking build and what a tack driver!

I'm reviving my tang safety m77 — at gs getting barreled to 338 Sherman. Modified the bolt stop, fabbed an extended box and opened up back end of action action to allow OAL of 3.6.

Well the Sherman worked perfectly! The Berger 215 was as devastating as I'd heard.
