Hey everybody. Trying to work up a load for the 6.5 grendal AR-15 and have become frustrated. I have palmetto upper with 18 in barrel and have been using cfe223 and 123 gr sst bullets and have now almost used a whole box trying to get something to work. So many other posts in forems on this combo doing well with the grendal. Im not new to shooting or reloading. Im now skeptical of maybe lemon barrel or bore issues. I shot one good group 1/2 moa at 100 yd with 31.5 gr thought i had the load went and made some more up and now its all over the place. Tried diff grains and seating depths. Any help would be appreciated.

Grendel =/= Grendal. Good spelling helps future generations have good results with iffy search engines.

Sharpen your pencil and give some details that might help. Otherwise you're about to get flooded with every rando dude's favorite personal recipe stack.

My suggestions would be:
  • Snug up your scope and then maybe find someone else to do your accuracy shooting so you can see if it's the shooter. If it could do well once, it can do it again.
  • PSA should not be expected to be Anschutz.
  • Your rifle may not like SST's. It happens. Try another bullet or another powder or a different primer.
  • Check your rifle for loose bits, especially the barrel. Wouldn't be the first AR that went to wobbling.
Start with 1 powder and 1 bullet. Find a weight of charge that gives good results with the bullet between .040" and .80 off the lands, work up in half grain increments. Take the winner and play with seating depth if needed. If you have to do more than that then something in the system; which includes the shooter, is busted.

Thanks for your input i have done all those things and am shooting from led sled am positive its not me. My shooting feels good. But having to try something else might be something ill have to do. I can only go as far out as mag allows me to which is also what ive done. Thanks

My bad on spelling grendel wrong and new to forems so wasnt sure how much to spell out on these. Started with 30 gr and worked up 1/2 gr each time to 32 gr which again i had 31.5 work great so i worked up more 31.5 gr And have never seen anything close to that group again. So i played with seating depths with that grain nothing, went back to starting at beginning and every load playing with seating depths. Whats weird is ill shoot 3 bullets each load and many of them will shoot 2 pretty descent 3/4 to 1 moa apart and then a third 2 1/2 to 3 in away. I now looks like i need to switch gears. Wanted cfe 223 to work it has great velocity. Thanks again

I'd just try a new bullet. I'm hoping you get it to come around as I have a new psa grundel that I hope shoots well. All my other psa shoot great. I'm starting with 99gr hammers.

Yeah, definitely calling it shooter first. Anyone that says they're positive it's not them, that's the first thing to fix. You're shooting off a sled so that's the first place I'd start. Get it off the sled and onto decent front and rear bags so you get your head position the same every time. Sleds screw up execution on the fundamentals of marksmanship. I've seen so many people SUCK on a sled and do well off a bag just because of that.

Your factory barrel will be throated pretty long so it can eat anything you shove in it. So, don't limit yourself to mag length during load development. Single load if you have to to find out what it wants. When you do find out then people can help find the bits that will combine to equal what you need or we can at least tell you if you'll never get there from here.

Ok advice taken thanks guys.

I would also try a different powder. If you want accuracy you need to look into a higher quality barrel. Try IMR8208. And different Bullets.
K thanks been stuck on cfe223 cause of the velocity it got and reviews from others and lack of funds to try 20 different things. LOL thanks again.

Ya I dont think barrel quality is a problem. Some of my best shooters are psa. My 300blk shoots .39" groups. Could be bad barrel but I would start with a different bullet. Those tend to be the biggest issue.
I know hammers are more expensive but if they don't shoot you know it's a bigger problem than powder and primer.

I haven't had the SST's shoot well in any 6.5 GR i have tried them in. The ELD's shoot much better. Load at mag length with cci 450's. If cfe 223 doesn't work then 8208 would be my next powder.
Hornady Black ammo will shoot pretty good in most AR 6.5 Grendel's might be worth a try to give you a benchmark.
The 6.5 Grendel forum is a good resource for all things Grendel.

The 65 Grendel forum has a lot of good information. One thing that is noted over and over is 120 grain Sierra match kings with the powders known to work in the Grendel such as cfe
