What other calibers can be built on a 270 win action?

My Son's buddy has a model 70 in 270 that needs a rebarrel. What other calibers could we go with on that action to make it reach out there a little more?

As much i personally don't care for a 270 are you sure it needs a new barrel? I 've seen a whole lot of barrels that people thought were shot out that were a much cheaper an easier fix.

Lots. Your son's buddy has a long action and standard bolt face. If you look at the SAMMI standards, pretty much anything that has a COAL less than about 3.38 and a rim diameter around .474 works. You can do a short action, so long as the bolt face is the right size (and you get more room in the magazine).

280 Ackley Improved would be a good option. How about a 338-06?

I don't know how much more performance you'll get over a 270 win, realistically . I shoot 140gr sierra hpbt gamekings that are great out there a ways.
I guess The 6.5-06 May be the best way to go in that long action platform. 6.5mm has a great bullet selection

Thanks guys, keep it comming. :)
I have not had a chance yet to look the rifle over but do know it has been shot a lot. However, knowing this kid it may not have been cleaned properly in a while. I will check that out.
That being said he did just buy a tika t3 light 6.5 cm after shooting my mtn. Accent cm so we would like to go a little heavier for more of an Elk gun. I do load for myself and a few others so I could load for him but already have a lot on my bench with what I an doing so am liking the sound of a 280 AI .
Keep the Info on barrel twist and all comming also.
A couple of the guys I am loading for will be doing there own once they finish getting set up then I will just be helping them with load development. And will open up some time to posibly load for him or have my son do it after we get developed.
Thanks for all the imput!... think Elk!

As others have said, if your ok with hand loading and fireforming, the Sherman cartridges are fantastic, and he could use his brass he already has. The performance break down of them is roughly as follows:
6.5 sherman sends 140's around 3300
270 sherman sends 170's around 3100
280 sherman sends 180's around 3050
300 sherman sends 215's around 2950
338 sherman send 250's around 2800.
They are pretty potent cartridges considering they are just improved .270 brass necked up or down to whatever flavor you choose.

But, if wildcat cartridges aren't your thing, and you want to do long range, I would consider simply rebarreling to a 1 in 8 twist standard .270 win, and shoot the 170 eol's or you can use some of the long range monolothic bullets as well. As an added benefit you would already be set up with brass, bullets, dies, etc. A standard .270 with 24-26" should send a 170 around 2700-2800 with reloder 26, and probably a couple other powders as well. That would be a respectable long range set up.

If you don't reload at all, about the best long range cartridge with decent long range factory ammo available would be a .280 ai, or possibly a 6.5 PRC. Unless you wouldn't mind having your smith open the bolt face up to a magnum diameter and slightly modify the feed rails, then that opens up another string of possible cartridges. Hopefully I didnt just open up a rabbit hole.....

Elk--280ai for flatt shooting. 30/06 is still great over a hundred years and counting. 338/06 and the good old 35 whelen for elk hammers. Of course all the Sherman's if you want the most out of a standard bolt face! Besides just a good cleaning check that all the screws are tight, the scope, and the crown. Don't overlook that he could have just picked up any old cheap ammo and the rifle just doesn't like it.

I'm in the process of diagnosing a poorly shooting rifle. I'd kind of like it to be shot out, as I have ideas of what to turn it into.

But the more I check, the more I think it's not the barrel being shot out and something else. Just for consideration, but my examinations have looked at:
  1. Scope mounts: are they reliable and stable?
  2. Scope: is it reliable? Are the turret adjustments consistent?
  3. Is the barrel really clean? Does it have any carbon build up?
  4. Ammo: if you're handloading, is the runout under control? Can the bullet feed naturally into the throat?

What does reach out there a little more mean? I have a .270 AI with 30" Lilja 3G 1:8" that propel a 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS MV (current accuracy load, have reach near 3100 FPS with H4831SC but group opened up and with pressure signs), 1654 FPS and 1063 FT-LBS of energy at 1100.

I believe the 6.5 PRC uses a magnum bolt face. If he did open the bolt face there are a few factory options like the above mentioned 6.5 PRC, 7mm mag, 300 WM, etc that might fit what the op is looking for.
