LRH Members,

Please Help! My father in law is interested in building a 6.5 PRC. I do not know a ton about the cartridge, but it seems pretty intriguing. One question, can I build this rifle on a standard SA Remington 700 hinged floorplate? Or do I have to extend the magazine? He only wants to shoot factory ammunition, no intentions of handloading long loads. I think the factory 143 grain ELDX comes in at around 2.95".

Thanks in Advance Everyone!

Colton

It should work. I built one on a 700 SA clone with handloads at 2.96" and they work fine. Just make sure your donor action has a magnum bolt face.

Lets slow down a second. It will NOT fit in a standard Remington short action magazine box and action setup. They have a mag box around 2.850" You will have to have a custom or a Remington machined for a Wyatts box and even that will be cutting it close.

Got it, yeah I thought I needed an extension. Any thoughts on using a long action instead of a short action? Will he have feeding issues?

Build on a Kimber 8400 WSM, Winchester model 70 WSM, or Tikka T3X WSM, they all have 3" or longer mag boxes and will feed the PRC factory ammo fine.

Hmm... I didn't know that about the Winchester SA magazines. I can get a hold of a Winchester wsm pretty easy. Does the 3" or greater mag length apply to all the Winchester short actions? Mostly I am referring to the cheaper models with the blind mags.

Thanks,

I used a long action on mine, you will need to get the wyatt centerfeed box or it doesn't feed very will with the standard BDL, staggerfeed floor plate.

If you have a little extra to spend on an action the bighorn origin short action is long enough for the PRC

Is that just as simple as switching out the box and follower?
