Loading for the 6.5x284

According UPS my new 6.5x284 barrel will be here. I hope to get it all head spaced this weekend.

It's a Savage style ER Brown Accuracy barrel. 26" 1-8 <.80 at the muzzle.

Sire hope it shoots as good as the reviews claim!

Hello men!

I'm starting to reload for my 6.5x284 Norma. I already found a load which I started with new Lapua brass measuring 2.170, federal primers, Berger 140 VLD being pushed by 54.9 grns of H1000. Shoots really well! My question is now I have 150 rounds of once fired brass that after resizing measure 2.173 to 2.175ish. Should I trim those all back to 2.170 or get a tool to measure my MAX case length of my chamber? I also have some Nosler factory brass that measure 2.160ish (which is Berger's book trim length) that I used to break in me barrel with. What say you all???

What is your barrel length and velocity with this load?
Thanks

Well I have a 26" Gary Schneider barrel and ran ten rounds through a chrono and got (if I can remember correctly) 3020 to 2975 FPS but I don't trust chronos... But what I do know For sure is being zeroed at 100, at 700 yds my bullet drop is right at 96 inches... I've shot three three shot groups at different times and got the same result and each group measures roughly 3" groups. So on the G7 balistic calculator it says I'm getting 3009 FPS I think it said, I'll look for sure tomorrow... what do you think?

At 2000FT, 45F, my 6.5x284's with a 140gr Berger HVLD would drop 96" at 700 yards at approximately 2975 FPS. Considering atmospheric and rifle variations compared to my data, I think your velocity is in the ball park. Your accuracy is very good at <.5 MOA.

Good morning! In Casa Grande, AZ where I am our elevation is at 1450 ft 50F and I am using 140 Berger VLD. So we're pretty much at the same on a lot of variables. I am very happy with this rifle, it probably is more accurate than I ever will be. Haha! I'v read a lot of your post and I see you use Retumbo in your 284s quite a bit.

Yes, Retumbo been my preferred powder for my 6.5x284's for about 8 years. It has proven to be very accurate as well as consistent over this period. I have tried a few different powders, including H1000, and they work quite well. Retumbo, being a slower burner, appears to run at lower pressures given equivalent velocity to the other powders and has higher case fill.

How many grns of powder do you usually run and what brass, primer? I'm running Lapua brass and Fedral primers. I want to try the Berger elite hunters, have you used them?

I haven't tried the Elite Berger's. I use 140gr Berger and JLK VLD's for hunting. I use 57-58gr of Retumbo and Federal 210M or CCIBR2 primers depending on which of the rifles I have owned/own. Lapua brass. Velocity runs 2975-3015/ES <12 FPS.
Some 200 yard groups with my rifles using Retumbo.

Holy crap! Nice! The elite hunters are a little longer than the VLD so seating depth is gonna have to be changed... I assume? I also tried the 4831 but it didn't shoot as well for me. I would like to try the retumbo though, I don't know anything about it so is it temp sensitive?
