I am having a 300 WSM built right now and I am trying to decide on a scope. Current build is as followed:
AG Alpine Hunter stock
Proof SL 24" barrel
APA Fat Bastard side port brake
Triggertech Special trigger
BDL hinged floor plate
Lone Peak titanium action

This gun will be used for pack hunting in the mountains. I am leaning towards the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25x56 but a little concerned about the weight. I have also looked at the VX-6HD 3-18x50 because its a little lighter. Honestly, I don't know anything about scopes for long range hunting. Does anyone have any suggestions on a scope?

What is the furthest shot you feel comfortable with using that scope?
1000 yds is about as far as I can get around my area. I personally prefer 25 power for 1000 yds but would have no problem taking game at that distance with this scope. The glass is just as clear as my ATACR to my eyes anyway and the turrets have been tracking well for me so far.

I run Nightforce nxs scopes some for long range hunting but they too are heavy. It's hard to beat the nxs line of
Scopes for durability and the customer service is excellent. I've had a sour taste in my mouth for years from crap scopes leupold put out. They may make good stuff now but they lost a lifetime buyer in me.

Thanks for the info. What caliber are you shooting?
This is on a 6.5 SAUM but I also shoot a 28 Nosler with a VX6 4-24X52 that is my dedicated LR hunting rifle. I like the new Leupolds due too the weight savings when compared to Nightforce or the Swarovski X5.

I agree with some of the older stuff being crap and I was not a fan until they came out with the VX5 and VX6 HD lines. I have several Nightforce scopes but they are too **** heavy for my carry rifles so I jumped on the Leupold train and have been happy. They have great customer service and a **** good warranty.

March Optics has some pretty nice light scopes too. I just bought a 10-60x56 High Master for load development and ladder testing but I haven't had a chance to use it yet since its been single digit temps here with a foot of snow on the ground and windy.

I've got a 40-60 highmaster and a couple Nightforce competition scopes on my benchguns but there are a little much for hunting lol. My brother like his vortex scopes and hunts with them but I don't know what they weigh. If you know some prs guys you may ask them what the lightest scopes are they are used.

If you are really trying to shave weight off. I took a 3-15 NXS off my lighter rifle and replaced it with the Swaro Z3 3-10. It has the BRX reticle. I figured in a 30-06 lightweight I didn't need to dial. I live in VA and the last deer shot with the NXS was on 3 power anyway. Reduced the optic weight by over half. NF 31 oz, Swaro 12.7 oz. It's not got the turrets, parallax adj, etc. but it is very clear glass and lightweight.
